Bosnian police believe they have located a girl filmed hurling puppies into a river
Source: The Canadian Press

Police in Bosnia say they believe they have located a young woman shown in a video throwing puppies into a river.

Police in the central Bosnian town of Bugojno say they have found the girl they suspect is seen on the video killing six newborn puppies by throwing them into the river one by one. The disturbing video provoked worldwide outrage after being posted online earlier this week.

Police say they have located the girl, who is a juvenile, from leads given by animal protection groups in the country.

The girl's parents will soon be questioned, police said. Under recently adopted animal protection law, people can be fined up to €5,000 ($6,400) for cruel treatment of animals.

1. I hope she gets the help she clearly needs. If she grew up in Bosnia, she's probably seen some
trauma, given her age.

4. I hope (in vain) that she gets the prison time she needs. There is NO EXCUSE for her
actions.

Both she and the "person" doing the filming deserve long prison terms.

6. Sorry - but I do not condone or excuse animal cruelty. That's just me. Again - THERE IS NO EXCUSE
for her actions!

Blaming it on an undiagnosed/imaginary mental illness is bullshit.

She filmed it for christ sakes! Sociopaths get no free pass from me.

20. I doubt that anyone condones that
Edited on Fri Sep-03-10 02:17 PM by jberryhill
The question is what do you do to a child who has engaged in atrocious behavior.

It's not about "excusing" or "condoning" a damned thing.

You can lock up a screwed up 15 year old for 30 years, and at the end of the day you get a more screwed up 45 year old.

8. Who said she was emotionally disturbed? Was the camera person emotionally disturbed too?
Nobody has even talked to her or the camera person and you've concluded that she is emotionally disturbed? How do you know that? Is it possible that she may just be a very cruel person?

21. That she is emotionally disturbed is readily apparent
Edited on Fri Sep-03-10 02:21 PM by jberryhill
That broken children can be fixed, with greater success than adults, is also apparent.

You are the same person you were when you were 12? Why or why not?

Kids that kill animals for fun need intervention, so that they do not become adult sociopaths.

Perhaps she should just be executed, yes?

29. I don't have any sympathy for her whatsoever

Why is therapy considered some form of "sympathy"?

One doesn't remove a diseased appendix out of some loving concern for the appendix.

Considering that what is appropriate for adults is equally appropriate for children is pretty much what pedophiles also believe, however.

17. I'm glad your experiences didn't make you do monstrous things.
Most people don't wake up and want to throw puppies in a river; there's usually some kind of trauma behind it. Just because you experience that trauma doesn't mean you will do something monstrous.

12. She looks well dressed to me, they do have a video camera, a youtube account and internet access.
That's more than some folks in the US and it's still against the law here and in her country too so your point is... kinda pointless. Plus, I live in farm country and nobody's throwing puppies into rivers over here.

19. puppies and kittens are second only to porn
when it comes to what people watch and email each other on the internets. srsly, even if you read 100% political blogs like i try to do, you can't escape them.

i missed the firestorm and haven't watched the video. i did grow up in a very rural area, and i remember hearing about people doing this with unwanted litters. not people i respected, of course, but people who were poor and kinda trashy and just didn't want the hassle of getting in the truck and driving down to the shelter. the truth is a very large number of shelter animals are euthanized, for all people don't want to dwell on that truth. sticking puppies in a sack and dropping it in the river is hardly different.

22. Farm practices and engaging in this as "sport" are of course two different things

And, yes, I haven't seen the video, nor am I likely to, but the understanding appears to be that this was the kind of thing that was merely wanton killing.

Kids that kill animals for fun need intervention, because if that behavior is not corrected it can bloom into full blown sociopathy.

25. Sorry, I grew up, and still live, in a rural area. There are far more humane ways of doing it.
One of the most common ways to do this nowadays is to gas them. You just need a hose running through the wall of a toolshed. When an animal needs to be put down, you just close the animal in the shed, stick the hose in the tailpipe of a car, and wait about 45 minutes. The death is odorless and painless...the animal simply goes to sleep, and the brain shuts down due to oxygen deprivation. Zero suffering involved. I've known a few ranchers who have done this to cows, sheep, and horses when a vet wasn't available.

Throwing them into a river is just cruel, as they will spend the last 30 seconds of their lives gripped with terror as they thrash for air...their final moments wracked with excruciating pain as they pull dirty water into their lungs.

I still remember, as a kid, the first time my dad taught me to kill a chicken. He said, "Make sure the axe is sharp and your aim is perfect...you don't want it to suffer." It's true that people in rural areas are often called on to end the lives of animals, but that doesn't mean that we do it callously or without regard to the animals suffering. The goal is ALWAYS to kill the animal as quickly and painlessly as possible.

Dropping them into the river is neither quick or painless.

31. oh, i completely agree!
my grandfather had a big ranch with lots of different kinds of animals and he always said, and i believe, "don't keep an animal you can't afford vet services for." no, i'm talking about the trashy family down the road, with six kids in a trailer and a tar paper shack that lived down the road from me. they were too trashy and poor to get their dog fixed, and she was always having litters. the older kids were the ones who got stuck with the job of dealing with some of the puppies, and they didn't have a car (the family had one, total). they weren't the only people in the county i heard would do that.

30. I think you're right about that. It amazes me how many kids get thier lives messed up while
adults are concerned about being concerned about kids and let the kids slip thru the cracks. In a way the concern becomes a sort of pornography itself. 30 or 40,000 dead Bosnians are history. Six dead puppies are a world wide cause for outrage. To the point of suggesting putting what is at most a teenager in prison. What about the fact that living through the Serbian resistance to the break up of Yugoslavia might contribute to some sort of stress syndrome showing itself in cruelty to puppies? And from the the US where we throw animals away out of inconveniance to so-called shelters that "euthenize" puppies. How is being put into an oil drum and being gassed by truck exhaust (which does happen every single day somewhere in the US) so much nicer than being drowned?
