Report: Offshore IT outsourcing helps economy
http://zdnet.com.com/2100-1104_2-5181612.html

Offshore outsourcing of software and information technology services tasks not only is boosting the U.S. gross domestic product but also helping to generate U.S. jobs, including positions in the IT sector, according to the report. Released Tuesday, it was prepared by research firm Global Insight and sponsored by the Information Technology Association of America trade group.

ITAA's members include tech giants IBM, Electronic Data Systems and Accenture. These companies are among those that are locating operations in lower-wage countries such as India.

The "incremental economic activity" from offshore IT outsourcing created more than 90,000 net new jobs in 2003, and is expected to create 317,000 net new jobs in 2008, according to the report.

Shipping software and IT services work abroad leads to higher real wages for U.S. workers through lower inflation and higher productivity, according to the study. Real wages were 0.13 percent higher in 2003 and are expected to be 0.44 percent higher in 2008, the study states.

1. Don't listen to this bull shit the theory that these companies are using
savings to expand their business and create more jobs at home is prue bull shit. They are taking the savings as profits and showering the CEOs and other executives with bonuses.

31. Oh, didn't you know? There are actually two different economies,...
Edited on Tue Mar-30-04 08:41 PM by Just Me
,...one for the rich and one for the rest of us. The one they are speculating about pertains to the economy for the rich and is quite accurate.

BULLS&(*!

I'll believe that when my fiancee, a computer programmer with 10 years' experience, is employed again. It's been 2 1/2 years, and she never even got/gets interviews!

11. Snow job
It's just the now familiar echo chamber.

Story written by people with agenda (right wing media flacks,
paid lobbyists), gets picked up and "reported" by interviewing
a "principle" (who, apparently, have neither principles or
morals), then the lie enters the mainstream echo chamber where it
rebounds and amplifies until it becomes "well known fact".

All the debunking in the world doesn't help, apparently.

One question I want Lou Dobbs to put to his next "pro outsource, pro
free trade" dillhole is "What is the end result of outsourcing? What
jobs CANNOT be outsourced? And when all that can, have been, will
there be enough consumers left here in the US that can even afford to
shop at Walmart for their cheap foreign made goods?

I haven't thought of a good answer to globalization and the end game of
free trade. One would LIKE to think that billions of people in China and India become the new American middle class, making enough money so that THEY become the consumers that drives the economic engines and we
here in the US move to higher paying upper middle class jobs/lifestyles (at least as far as goods and services that we can afford). But I don't believe this utopia. It ain't going to be that
way. Those folks in China and India will not be paid enough to be the
new massive consumer class, and there won't be enough "creative" jobs left here for us to move into higher standard of living brackets (but
possibly at lower real dollar incomes).

If someone can point to something that proves me wrong...

12. wtf...
this topic is a little near and dear to me, says she who is about to lose her house. What pure and simple bullshit. Are they really saying that sending jobs off-shore creates more jobs here. That's fuzzy logic I don't understand. How can anyone say that with a straight face.

Yes, we transfered 20 positions off shore but by doing so we created 30 more.

Higher real wages? higher productivity? this really makes me want to scream, throw up, or both.

:wtf:

19. I DID what they said to do.
In 2000 I spent 10K on a computer technician class.
In 2002 I spent another 12K on a Network Administrator class.
I cannot find anything except contract work.
Let me tell you all how it works,
You get a call. Can you work today?
Yes I can. I work for anywhere from 1 day to 1 month.
Then I'm off for anywhere from 1-6 weeks.
I have little experience so I take the lowest paying positions.
Now I have a rep as the guy that will jump at the lower paying jobs.
And,yes, I am grateful to get the work, it beats my $89 a week unemployment.
Meanwhile my payments for my school loans march on.
The people I work with have alot more experience then me, they are deeper in debt then I am,AND they are competing for the same jobs.
It has been really tough on my family and I.
Now what part of the FUCKING RETHUGLICAN PROGRAM HAVE I NOT DONE!!??
Lets see,I go to school, check, going into debt to do so.
I go into the IT field, as we all know thats the big thing, check.
And, as MY luck holds true, they offshore all the jobs I paid thousands to be trained for.
It's a HUGE FUCKING JOKE on me.
Meanwhile, the school loans have to be paid, on my unemployment and my wife's salary...
They are lying. How do I know?
I am "living the dream", that's how I know.

22. Someone needs to ask exactly how outsourcing creates new jobs here.
Color me clueless....but I cannot understand that. The year 2008 in the report made me feel really good about the future of the economy. Wonder what we do until then.

helpful to post the link here so that people could see the story and not have to hunt for it in order to post it on LBN. (I don't have thread posting permissions yet either.)

I had just seen the story myself and came to look for it on these boards - I had the same thought as you.

30. that old "popular" gwb
from the same article:

"But Bush may be reminding voters about why they liked
him in the first place," she added. "This is
harkening back to the Bush that people liked so much in 2000
and 2001, who did have a lot less edge."

They liked him so much he lost the popular vote and had to
have the Supreme Court bail his pathetic ass out.
