Putin compares himself to FDR as he hints at third term

The 57-year-old Russian Prime Minister appeared to deliberately fan speculation on Monday when he met with foreign academics and journalists at the Black Sea resort of Sochi.

When asked whether his potential re-election to the presidency would jeopardise Russia’s political system, Mr Putin likened himself to FDR, the United State’s longest-serving president.

“In his day, US President (Franklin) Roosevelt was re-elected four times in a row because this did not contradict the American Constitution. Neither I nor President (Dmitry) Medvedev will do anything that contradicts existing Russian legislation and the country’s basic law,” he said.

Wel, mr Putin are no FDR, and its not US he is prime minister of either.. But he problery want to get into Kremlin again, as President... And even tho many was scared first time around, that he wanted to be there forever, he accepted all the rules of the laws, and was elected prime minister instead of President after hi's two terms was up... At least he is following the law to a degree...

And, wasen't FDR elected 4 times in a row, both in 1933-1938 and 1942, and would posible also have won in 1945, if he had lived that long, becouse most peopole wanted him in office as long as the war was not finished.. The Republicans was making it sure that no others could serve that long not long after the war was over I figure... (and it was posible to the best, when JR was president in 2008, even tho it backfired of themself)

3. FDR was elected to a fourth term in 1944.

He died five months after the election.

And breaking the unoffical rule of only two terms was something that many republicans and democrats disliked. It had been tradition since Washington took office.

4. Looking back at the New York Times archives from the 1930's

There was talk about Roosevelt running for a 3rd term in 1936, 4 months BEFORE he was even relected for a second!

The chatter revolved around the president's "New Deal" and the long term implementation of it.

Of course, as events unfolded, the Nazi, Russian, and eventual Japanese threats all but assured a 3rd and 4th terms for FDR.


As far as Putin, he's been in power since mid-1999, so he's already approaching FDR's 12 year run. Of course there has been an ongoing "war on Terror" regarding Chechnya so maybe that's a good excuse to keep the reigns.

5. Just Imagine

the labor, health and wealth reforms that FDR could have gotten passed, had he lived for his final term. His "Second Bill of Rights" was astonishingly progressive and the successful economies of Europe, Japan and the "axis" countries are modeled on this ideal.
America, now more than ever, needs another FDR.
