WSU one of 7 schools picked for wider mad cow testing

SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER STAFF AND NEWS SERVICES

Washington State University has been selected to begin testing for mad cow disease as part of the federal government's tenfold increase in surveillance.

The lab could begin accepting brain and tissue samples from dairy and beef cattle in mid-May, and provide test results within one day, WSU spokesman Charlie Powell said yesterday.

WSU and six other schools selected for the expanded testing program will use a rapid testing method to provide quicker results and aid the nation's expanded effort to determine whether and to what extent mad cow exists in the United States.

The other schools are the University of California at Davis, Colorado State, Texas A&M, Georgia, Wisconsin and Cornell.
