Terry Jones (Quran burning guy) Accused of 'Spiritual Abuse' at Cologne Church
Source: Der Spiegal (Germany)

US fundamentalist pastor Terry Jones, who wants to burn copies of the Koran on Sept. 11, ran a church in the western German city of Cologne until last year when members of the congregation expelled him. Former members have spoken of his hate-filled sermons and insistence on "blind obedience."

Former church members are still undergoing therapy as a result of "spiritual abuse," Schäfer said. According to Schäfer, Jones urged church members to beat their children with a rod and also taught "a distinctive demonology" and conducted brainwashing.

"Terry Jones appears to have a delusional personality," speculates Schäfer. When he came to Germany in the 1980s, Jones apparently considered Cologne "a city of Hell that was founded by Nero's mother," while he thought Germany was "a key country for the supposed Christian revival of Europe," Schäfer says.

I actually came across this earlier today and, when I didn't see any reference to it on DU, felt it merited being in LBN since it exposes the heretofore unknown-to-me cult-like aspirations of this charlatan. However, I may have missed it and this may have to be moved to another forum.

2. Because the M$M = "infotainment." The nuttier the spectacle, the more "newsworthy."
Race to the bottom.

28. They have the courage to report on stories that the others won't...
Without them, there wouldn't be much point in turning on "the TV machine" for actual news... :(

29. Thom Hartmann is virtually the only media figure talking . . .
. . . about this.

So people who aren't his listeners are not hearing about it.

3. I'll bet there's more than 'spiritual abuse' to this story.
People like that are very rigid and authoritarian, which is the abuser's personality.

10. "Fundamentalist" has become the default label for this kind of personality type
I guess because we don't have any other word for it. Since they are authoritarian, rigid, black/white/no-gray, splitting thinkers, they trend toward the "fundamentalist" side of their religions.

And they exist in every religion and denomination. And because it is a personality type, and not something created by the religion itself, these kinds of "fundamentalists" share similarities in personality, belief, and practice no matter what the religion or where in the world they are.

11. This is obviously
the subversive work of a terrorist and his delusional followers, an act so deplorable that it has the potential of igniting a powder keg around the world. He may as well have an explosive vest around his garments and threatening to blow up his entire congregation, but of course they are not the ones who will feel the pain when retaliation takes place. Jones and his group are committing spiritual suicide. This fundamental group is not a religious group but an organized terrorist cell and the media can not wait to see the explosion.

13. Just amazing...
that he is able to command attention from the Pope, the Secretary of State of the United States of America... other luminaries and would Be's...

How can it be that some obscure pastor from some backwoods church with 50 members can command such attention? Incomprehensible...

Perhaps if Islam, and/or the media, would just put him on ignore...?

Or maybe it's because they won't...?

Will there be live coverage from CNN...?

"OK, he is lighting the match... OK, he is igniting the book, OK, here is the live shot of the book burning..."

I just can't believe it...!

How did we get here?

his first marriage. She was quoted as saying that he was abusive and his church a cult. That didn't get much play either. One of the talking heads on the local all news station runs a segment called Core Values. Usually it's on the conservative side, but last night he was interesting in discussing this "preacher". After agreeing that burning the Koran is permitted under the 1st Amendment, he continued on with 'but MSM ignoring the story is a core value.'

Sarah Palin, Terry Jones.... What's next, a cross-dressing CEO-turned-politician named Cleese Gilliam Chapman? And the worst part is that they're far less amusing than the originals.
