Xmas Express: Toys R Us to Open 600 temporary stores this holiday season

Toys R Us plans to invade the mall this holiday season, opening 600 temporary "Express" stores in malls and other shopping centers around the country, more than six times last year's count, and hiring 10,000 seasonal workers.

The move is the latest in Toys R Us' attempt to capture more holiday dollars amid tough competition from online retailers and mass merchants such as Walmart and Target. It also fills a gap in shopping malls created when KB Toys, which had been the largest mall-based toy seller, went out of business in 2008.

"We've been very aggressive during the economic downturn, and this is another aggressive action," CEO Jerry Storch said. "During the holiday season, mall traffic ramps up, and this will allow customers to purchase fill-in toys," when they are at the mall already, he said.

Toys R Us opened 90 standalone pop-up stores last holiday season. The company has been working on the plan since last year.

10. Are legos still made in the Netherlands?

A few years ago I was toy shopping for some kids and IIRC Legos were some of the only toys that I encountered that were not made in China.

I prefer not to give cheap chinese trinkets away for Christmas I prefer gifts that actually have some meaning and value.

I don't know if LEGO ever made parts in the Netherlands. Are you thinking of Denmark (where LEGO was founded and is headquartered)?

LEGO parts are primarily made in Denmark, Eastern Europe, and Mexico. A very small number of parts are made in China, LEGO is walking a very thin line with their China production. Pretty much none of the "regular" LEGO building parts are made in China, but some of the "accessory" parts are. Examples of LEGO parts made in China include; electronics (parts with lights or motors), fabric (capes, sleeping bags, sails), and minifigures sold for non-play purposes (keychains, magnets, etc).
