Pastor cancels Quran-burning, then reconsiders
Edited on Thu Sep-09-10 09:10 PM by Gman
Source: AP via Yahoo

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – An anti-Islamic preacher backed off and then threatened to reconsider burning the Quran on the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, angrily accusing a Muslim leader of lying to him Thursday with a promise to move an Islamic center and mosque away from New York's ground zero. The imam planning the center denied there was ever such a deal.

Maybe like Newt Gingrich convinced him otherwise?

1. The media will NOT cover it, according to the Maddow show
even Fox news ain't gonna touch it. He is going to cancel due to that... and he probably raised enough money.

I hope they come next year to Comicon again. Even if I don't buy tickets, I will show up to point and laugh...

6. I don't thinka media blackout is possible
In an era of video smart phones and YouTube, I don't think it's possible for the media to suppress a story, or images, or video, the way they and others seem to think they can.

Based on earlier incidents (e.g. the riots over the Danish cartoons) I think what the media are doing with their coverage limitation announcements is hoping that by doing so, when the trouble starts, they and their people won't be subjected to specific fatwas for distributing the images.

Right now it appears to me, from what I see, that a) that Koran burnings are going to happen if not by Jopnes then by others, and b) the apparent U.S media accord to not cover the event live, or report on it fully, won't matter much in the end, since the feared images will get out to the Muslim world anyway through the Internet.

Ironically, with American media running for the Hills under the guise of responsible journalism, the only people who won't see the feared images will be people watching American TV news outlets.

7. So, is this media NOT covering a story? A "pastor" of a 50 person cult in Florida
Edited on Thu Sep-09-10 08:55 PM by No Elephants
is getting 40,000 outlets reporting his every brain fart? Yeah, that'll do wonders for us.

He may as well go ahead and burn them at this point. No matter what really happens, the die has been cast.

Where has this kind of coverage of the day's events in Iraq and Afghanistan been?

The Founders surely would have re-considered the whole freedom of the press thing if they could have foreseen what frivolous, ridiculous clowns "journalists" would become. They would have had it expire under its own terms faster than the Bush tax cuts may(which we should start calling the working class hand out to the wealthy. I'm sick of reinforcing the meme of "Republicans are fiscally conservative and cut taxes while Democrats tax and spend."

Joe Scarborough's show starts every day with a tape of his saying, among other things, "class warfare never works." You know why? Because he knows it does work--against Republicans--and he's hoping to brainwash everyone.

8. Hours later, Jones said Musri "clearly, clearly lied to us."
Standing outside his 50-member Pentecostal church, the Dove Outreach Center, alongside Imam Muhammad Musri, the president of the Islamic Society of Central Florida, Jones said he relented when Musri assured him that the New York mosque will be moved.
Musri, however, said after the news conference that the agreement was only for him and Jones to travel to New York and meet Saturday with the imam overseeing plans to build a mosque near ground zero.
Hours later, Jones said Musri "clearly, clearly lied to us."

********

Or perhaps you were clearly, clearly deluded, like you are with your self importance and misguided faith. If you are what Jesus is supposed to be about, then Jesus clearly clearly lied.

Well, it's gettin' more attention than the Glen Beck thingie in DC.

12. Minister: Quran Burning Might Not be Canceled
Source: CBS

A Florida minister who planned to burn the Quran on the ninth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks is "reconsidering" his cancellation of the event Thursday after learning that a deal to move the location of a controversial mosque near New York's ground zero wasn't what he thought.

"We're definitely going to think it over and reconsider it," the Rev. Terry Jones told reporters Thursday night. "Now we're in somewhat a state of limbo, and we have to rethink of course our position."

Earlier, Jones canceled the event under intense pressure, standing outside his small church alongside Imam Muhammad Musri, the president of the Islamic Society of Central Florida.

Musri and the imam planning the New York mosque disputed Jones' contention that a deal had been cut. A representitive for the New York imam http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2010/09/09/national/main6851090.shtml">told CBS News that any agreement with Jones is false.

Now he's 'thinking' about it. Then he'll announce a press conference to tell us his decision.

17. A big puppet show here huh?
Move the mosque, cancel the burning.

Don't move the mosque, burn Qurans!

I don't care either way what Pastor Jones does. Let him get fined by the fire department (if he violates any laws) and laughed at by sane Americans. Maybe some civil lawsuits by families of slain military personnel.

21. So what's the deal--he claimed he was
burning the Qurans because they inspired Islamic militancy and then he's not burning them because he thinks he has a deal with the NY Muslim center--so how does the "deal" override his so-called principles? What a dangerous fraud he is. I wish the media would walk away from this guy's shenanigans and leave him with no coverage.

25. He's won the argument
He has linked his book burning with the Ground Zero mosque. He also made sure that government officials who expressed positive feelings for the mosque have expressed negative feelings about his activities.

He's especially shown that while Barack Obama will support a mosque in the vicinity of Ground Zero unequivocally, he will completely oppose the burning of a book that, while it does no physical violence to any person, will result in radical Muslims possibly doing physical violence to persons who had no direct connection with the Koran burnings.

He's won, because he's made his point, postponement or not.

27. It's patently absurd to compare a community whose intended purpose
Edited on Fri Sep-10-10 12:48 AM by Arrowhead2k1
was for residents to come together around a common interest of worship to play sports, bake cookies, and other activities with no purpose whatsoever to incite hatred in the neighbourhood. In fact, it is slated to include Jewish and Christian sections as well. And yet people are comparing this to book burners whose purposes are to divide, create animosity, and alienate fellow Americans and our Muslim allies/partners abroad.

There's no comparison here. None. At. All.

28. Correct ...
... but to quote the absurd person himself, "he's made his point".

i.e., it doesn't matter how absurd, moronic or pointless the comparison,
it has now been made and that "side" will adopt it as gospel (if you'll
pardon the phrase).

29. But the comparison has been made
And this nutball fundie attention whore pastor has clearly shown that they will be linked in many minds.

He's also provided a way for the reich wing to distance themselves from Islamophobia by allowing them an opportunity to say that burning a religious book is 'against our values', while progressives are left to say 'but it will incite violence'.
