Obama raises pitch against outsourcing
Source: Economic Times of India

10 Sep, 2010, 04.26AM IST, Pankaj Mishra,ET Bureau

BANGALORE: US President Barack Obama on Thursday once again targeted outsourcing of jobs overseas by American companies, increasing the pressure on local firms in an attempt to secure some benefit ahead of the crucial November elections in his country.

Obama, speaking at a rally in Parma, Ohio, the state which banned outsourcing of work overseas by government departments, said he remained firm on ending tax breaks for American firms that sent jobs abroad.

“One of the keys to job creation is to encourage companies to invest more in the United States. But for years, our tax code has actually given billions of dollars in tax breaks that encourage companies to create jobs and profits in other countries,” Obama said, flanked by Ohio governor Ted Strickland, who is trailing in the polls and is fighting to retain his governorship.

Obama’s party, the Democrats, faces a hugely disillusioned and angry electorate on November 2, and is widely expected to lose control of the House of Representatives. The US president has spent the last few days trying to rally his base with promises to protect jobs and spur economic growth.

4. thank you for the link
I hope it is a permanent change in policy. No ties to the IT industry myself it is just very hard hearing the stories of friends. Last week another one was let go. They told her it was cheaper to use two India programmers, even 3 if needed; salaried with all the extra time expected she was bringing home the princely sum of 12-15/hr.

5. One can hope this change will be permanent....
I'm sorry to hear about your friend. There are so many similar stories out there from blue and white collar workers alike. (Keep in mind, I'm from Ohio and we've been decimated by NAFTA)

There's a member here on DU by the name of "Azlady" who trained 4 H-1B replacements at 4 different companies. She's quite qualified, yet still out of work. Her home just went into foreclosure. :(

3. Promises to protect jobs.
About damn time somebody did something don’t you think? I am all for helping other people in the world improve their standard of living but when the guy who lives in that trailer on the other side of the ridge has kids that are hungry and don’t have decent clothing because his job in the textile mill went to Mexico. Well he comes first. I know he gets food stamps and other assistance but it’s slowly killing him. He needs a decent job.
