Soldier's widow gives birth hours after funeral

It has been a bittersweet day for the family of Lance Corporal Jared MacKinney, whose widow gave birth to their second child only hours after his funeral. Beckie MacKinney gave birth to a boy, named Noah Jared, two weeks ahead of schedule. He is a brother to the couple's daughter Annabell.

Hundreds of mourners packed a Brisbane church this morning to farewell Lance Corporal MacKinney, who was killed in Afghanistan last month. Members of his Brisbane-based 6th Battalion escorted his body into the Ashgrove Baptist Church resting on a gun carriage.

Ms MacKinney was too distressed to speak at the funeral, but in a statement said her late husband was an incredible man whose son would get to know him through her love and memories.

Lance Corporal MacKinney was killed during a three-hour gun battle with the Taliban in Tarin Kowt late last month.

1. this is terrible esp. since soldiers are being killed to prop up a corrupt Afghan gov't

taking our billion$ for rebuilding the country and investing it in Dubai real estate. At least O has no good reason to stay in Afghanistan, esp. with Karzai saying stay out of our corruption probes. We should get out of there TODAY, and not wait til 2011.
