Terry Jones: 'We will not burn the Quran'
Fla. pastor says on NBC's 'Today' show that his church will never carry out the plan

Updated 4 minutes ago
BREAKING NEWS

Pastor Terry Jones told NBC's "Today" show on Saturday that his church in Gainesville, Fla., would not burn Qurans in protest of the building of an Islamic center near the site of the Sept. 11 attacks.

"We will definitely not burn the Quran, no," he said.

"Not today, not ever," he said when pressed about whether his planned demonstration might happen at a later date.

7. Says Jones...
Jones said that his church's goal was "to expose that there is an element of Islam that is very dangerous and very radical."

He told NBC that "we have definitely accomplished that mission."

Just change "Islam" to "Christianity" and he accomplished that, too.

15. Many leading Christian 'ministers' hurl bait against gay people
We are threatened with war, violence, painted as horrible monsters. Just one single hate preacher, who was a surrogate for Obama no less, has told television audiences to take off the gloves, because this is war, gay people are trying to kill our children. This is a mainstream guy. He also says we are vampires. And why does he do this? No one slandered him or his faith. He simply picked up the hate and ran with it.
So you know, all over the world, clerics such as that one cause real life violence and death and discrimination. Look at their work in Africa, really look at it, then come tell me how tidy clean that faith is. Hell, look at Fred Phelps and Pat Robertson and tell me about it.
In Africa, Christians do in fact kill and maim gay people. In fact, these 'ministers' have tried to get laws on the books over there to execute gay people.
It is what it is. Facts are facts. History is history. Honesty is honesty, self service is self service.

37. Your point is well taken
I've been under the impression that Islam is where Christianity was five hundred years ago, being willing to kill and torture others for even slight differences in interpretation of dusty old books.

I had imagined that Christianity had moved past all that, but you're absolutely right about their treatment of gay and lesbian people in some corners of the world.

48. You really like this guy, don't you?
Of course as you well know by now, much as keep trying to make this over a book, you know well since it's been pointed out to you over and over again, that it is NOT just over a book. Fox News has attempted to paint Muslims as lunatics who would kill over a single incident like this.

You and they continue to ignore the bloody backdrop that is the reason why this provocation would incited extremists. And you and they continue to ignore the fact that they were created by that backdrop.

He dropped his plans because he most likely realized how much legal jeopardy he was in. That not all speech is protected and that his deliberate attempt to incite violence, which you have just verified for him, is one of those kinds of speech that is not protected.

I guess I was right ~ I knew he would back away once Obama, Petraeas and Holder informed him that what he was planning was 'dangerous'. That was very clever of them. Because he was left with no legal defense in the inevitable lawsuits coming his way.

He proved nothing about Islamic extremists that wasn't already known, but he did prove a lot about some Americans, some of them even on the 'left'. For that we should be grateful to him.

:sarcasm:

And slavery only ended in the U.S. around 150 years ago. I don't hate Christians, but I sure don't have any love for Christianity itself, or for most organized religion. Is your faith in Christianity so weak that you can't stand light being shined on its transgressions?

35. Now a new guy in Amarillo is going to do it !!!

Leader of anti-gay group in Amarillo plans to publicly burn Quran on 9/11 anniversary

.... David Grisham, the leader of a militant evangelical group in Amarillo, tells the local CBS affiliate that he plans to publicly burn the Muslim holy book on Saturday. Grisham is the leader of Repent Amarillo, which gained attention in January when it launched a boycott of Houston after the city elected on openly gay mayor, Annise Parker:

According to Grisham, he has questioned why he should go through with his plan, but in the end, he feels it is right.

“Terrorism was seeded by the ideas in the Quran. It’s the Quran that has put our troops in danger. Burning one isn’t going to put our troops in danger. It’s the ideas contained in that book that put them in danger,” said Grisham.

Grisham is a security guard at a nuclear-bomb facility called Pantex, according to media reports. Repent Amarillo goes by the moniker “Army of God” and refers to itself as the “special forces of spiritual warfare.” The group has also gained attention for a campaign to shut down a local swingers club, as well as a “warfare map” posted on its website identifying its enemies in Amarillo.

38. Having the right to do something doesn't always make it the right thing to do.
Maybe Jones saw the inherent hypocrisy of his actions--would he have supported the "Constitutional right" of a mosque to sponsor a Bible burning? Maybe he heard the plea of his daughter (who describes him as a power-mad megalomaniac). Maybe he got tired of the media attention. Maybe he was afraid that his past might be researched (he was ousted from a church he ran in Germany). Maybe he deferred to the U.S. military leaders who said it would endanger the troops. Maybe he was worried about the bill he would be getting for police overtime, or the fine he'd have to pay for not having a fire permit. But he's done the right thing, and I'm very happy.
