British, Canadian troops may have smuggled Afghan heroin, reports say

From Monday's Globe and Mail

Last updated on Sunday, Sep. 12, 2010 10:47PM EDT -

Military police in Britain are investigating reports that British and Canadian troops smuggled heroin out of Afghanistan, according to British media reports.

“We are aware of these allegations,” a spokeswoman for the Ministry of Defence told the Sunday Times. “Although they are unsubstantiated, we take any such reports very seriously and we have already tightened our existing procedures both in Afghanistan and in the UK, including through increasing the use of trained sniffer dogs.”

Published reports in Canada say Canadian Forces military police are looking into the accusations, but aren’t aware of an ongoing investigation into the activities of Canadian soldiers.

The investigation is focused on airports at Camp Bastion and Kandahar, where British and Canadian soldiers allegedly helped ship heroin from the war-torn country to airports abroad.

As the Times has a paywall, we'll have to rely on outside reports of what they're saying, for now.

Apparently Both sides in the Mideast conflict used Canadian UN peace troopers to smuggle info/stuff across the border. And the Troopers were glad to do that for a fee.

I might be wrong though..but I'm fairly certain it was Canadian Troops.

not that i'm saying all Canadian troopers are like that, but simply that it reminds me of what Victor Ostrovsky said.

2. Anyone who didn't know this already is a damned fool.
The heroin traffic out of Afghanistan is major major major. The war provides chaos and cover. It just obviously adds up to widespread, nearly universal, corruption, oozing into every available nook and cranny. So sad that people are going to be surprised when they learn about this.

6. Apart from speculation, have you got any links to articles proving British and Canadian troops
have been smuggling heroin from Afghanistan?

9. I didnt realize until a few years ago when i saw american gangster, but then I knew.
And it isn't just Canadians and Brits it is our guys too, and whatever operation they have is probably large with a number of higher ranking officers working with them out right or helping them cover their track after the fact.

8. On this story, I'd go with the Globe before the times
Anyway, not too shocking. When people get shot at often and risk their lives and can no longer reconcile why, they're gonna start looking out for number one.

10. I can't say I know the Globe that well, but I'd take almost any newspaper verses a Murdoch run one.
How's the flooding in China these days? Are you coming into your dry season now?
