'Super Wi-Fi' nears final approval in U.S.
Source: CBC

A new flavour of Wi-Fi, with longer range and wall-piercing power, could show up in wireless gadgets a year from now if the U.S. Federal Communications Commission works out the last details of new spectrum rules that have been long in the making.

Nearly two years ago, the FCC voted to open up the airwaves between broadcast TV channels — so-called "white spaces" — for wireless broadband connections that would work like Wi-Fi on steroids. But wrangling over key technical details, including concerns about interference with TV signals and wireless microphones, has prevented the use of these spaces.

On Sept. 23, the FCC plans to vote on rules meant to resolve those issues. FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski predicts electronics makers will jump at this "super Wi-Fi" technology, as the agency calls it, and make it just as popular as conventional Wi-Fi.

"We're hoping history will repeat itself," Genachowski said. "White spaces are a big deal for consumers and for investment and innovation."

1. I love the idea that in a few years, we're going to look at our current technology and laugh.
Just like we can sit around and make fun of dial up internet "Remember when you used to have to wait for AOL to sign on and you'd hear those modem noises? Oh yeah, that was funny."

We're going to be doing the same thing with our current technology. "Remember when you used to have to click on a video on the internet and wait for it to stream? Yeah, that was so slow".

4. Modem sounds... heavens that is one sound I'll NEVER miss.
Of course we now have the teeth-grinding screech of that horrendous woman from Alaska, Palin.

5. Preferences
It's all about trade-offs. As long as Palin remains a blabberhead I sometimes here about, I'm happy.

11. sure it does.
still, i remember when some people first started talking about how cell phones are linked to various diseases of the head organs. they were mocked too. but oddly, cell phone shielding standards are much, much more strict in other countries than they are here, and there are more and more studies which are coming out which suggest the US should follow suit.

just because our govt approves something doesn't mean it's "safe." i'd think any DUer would understand that by now. and much "research" that "proves" what we consume is "safe" is funded by the corporate entities that want to sell you whatever it is they're researching. or mostly not reviewed by underfunded, overworked govt agencies staffed by hacks and ideologues. (birth control "research," anyone?) now is not a good time to trust your govt, yo. and it's always a good time to be skeptical of science, because that is the founding principle of the scientific method. trust? no. verify on your own with reproducible results? hell, yes.

i'm not a beta tester for a reason, you know?

12. You've already been exposed to this all your life
Read the article; they're going to use the white spaces between analog broadcast bands, which wasn't available until... wait for it... the switch to digital television.
