Cheney trades barbs with Kerry on taxes

WASHINGTON Vice President Dick Cheney stepped up the Bush campaign's assault on John Kerry's economic record, asserting that the Massachusetts Democrat would turn the country back to recession by raising taxes on all Americans. Kerry shot back that the administration had sprung Cheney from "an undisclosed location and brought him out to attack me."

The jousting Monday also focused on the nation's rising gasoline prices, with both camps blaming each other for prices approaching $2 a gallon on average.

"If it keeps going up, Dick Cheney and George Bush are going to have to car-pool to work together," Kerry said Monday evening at a fund-raiser in San Francisco.

Kerry's campaign said he would propose a plan on Tuesday to drive down fuel costs by suspending replenishment of the nation's Strategic Petroleum Reserve and by urging oil-producing countries to increase production.

As a matter of fact, I believe escalated rhetorical offense is absolutely crucial in these early months. I find Kerry's rebuttal which effectively threw the monkey back on Cheney's back was quite effective.

Face it, when you are dealing with an "anything goes" opposition you had damned be prepared to be smarter, more durable and exceedingly persistent to win the battle.

2. How on earth could the rising gas price be Kerry's fault?

It's due to Haliburton sucking all the oil out of Iraq, and the falling dollar thinks to the world being embarrassed to admit that * is part of it!

4. Hmm, tell me again why taxes bring about a recession?

I don't understand the complex economics of our nation, and I certainly am not nearly as smart as Mr. Cheney, but it would seem that the money is going to be spent one way or another - we're only talking about who's money gets spent, and who does the spending:

Bush plan: Spend 1) the money of the middle/lower economic classes, and 2) lots of borrowed money, to be repaid by taxes on the middle/lower economic classes.

Kerry plan: Spend 1) the money of all the economic classes, and 2) a little less borrowed money, to be be repaid by taxes on all the economic classes.

Now, I apologize for being so dumb, Mr. Cheney, because the difference in tax plans seems pretty straightforward, but I just can't see it: How does the Kerry plan bring about a recession? :freak:

7. What is so wrong with a .50 gas tax?

Think of the people in need it could help. The less able in America deserve our help and I think a big gas tax is the way to go. Americans drive too much as it is and this could help. It's time for Americans to step up and start using public transportation to get around.

Think about it... a family takes their SUV or RV to vacation wasting gas when they could take the bus and save us the pollution and global warming. SO what if they can't have the freedom of driving where they desire...they get to see their spots and save the world in the process!

Hell, this administration invested $200BB in Iraq and all we got is a bill from Halliburton for overcharged gas being delivered to Iraq.

Add fuel efficiency standards and more transit subsidy and it would WORK

We have the lowest subsidy of transit (and about the worst systems) of anywhere and our inefficient cars are a joke. They should refurbish the rail system-get rid of the privatizers who are trying to destroy it-and build a real transportation system. and super tax inefficient cars, give a credit for buying the most efficient ones etc. give tax credits to industries who produce alt fuels etc. so much could be done...
