JPMorgan Chase's online banking site crashes
Source: Computerworld

Bank blames 'technical issues' for ongoing Chase.com outage that may now be 18-hours-old

September 14, 2010 02:41 PM ET

Computerworld - JPMorgan Chase is blaming "technical issues" for an outage to its online banking site that may well be one of the longest outages by a major provider in recent memory.

The bank, which has $2 trillion in assets, posted a message on its Chase.com portal asking customers to "log on later."

The bank said its online services were lost sometime "overnight" last night, and would not predict when they expect that the site will be restored.

ATMs, branches, and telephone call centers are not affected by the outage, though call center volume has increased, said Tom Kelly, a Chase spokesman.

The cause of the outage isn't clear, Kelly said. "It's a technical issue that we're dealing with."

In fact, I live a totally cash economy with only an ATM card and no loans whatsoever.

How do you think the ATM communicates with your bank?
How do you think your bank communicates between branches?

11. It doesn't matter to me
I only use the ATM card out of emergencies if I can't make it to the bank. The point I'm making is, I don't like having my personal details on the public intertubes, let alone my bank details.

25. Just to play devil's advocate...
Most Automated Teller Machines (ATM) run on either a proprietary operating system and/or an executable that establishes a secure connection between the user interface and the backend transaction server. This is quite different than signing into an online banking web site with MS Internet Exploder. ATMs don't browse porn sites and pick up Trojans, malware and viruses.

Banks use dedicated leased-lines, fractional T1 or, in some cases, full T1s, to communicate with branch offices. Over the past 10 years, several have now decided to move to Virtual Private Networks (VPN) to establish secure tunnels between the two points at a lower cost. Granted this does use the Internet for communication, the traffic is much more secure than your web browser traffic.

I used to develop software and maintain a lot of the equipment in a large bank... and I still won't use online banking. Why? Because it is about as secure as writing your PIN on the back of your ATM card. It's all fine until someone has access to view your card. On an internet connected workstation... well, there is no end in sight as to how many people have access to your personal data residing on your PC.

Software labs warn of ATM virus that steals money from banks

Two leading anti-virus software producers 'Doctor Web' and 'Kaspersky Lab' claimed to have discovered a new virus, in the networks of several bank ATMs, which is able to collect information from bank cards.

"This is a malicious programme intended to infect and survive in ATMs. It is possible that new software will appear, aimed at illegitimately using banking information and removing funds," an official of the Kaspersky Lab was quoted as saying by RIA Novosti news agency.

35. I was referring to ATMs in the US...
He said the virus is a Trojan which is able to infect the popular American Diebold brand of ATMs, used in Russia and Ukraine. Judging by the programming code used, there is a high probability that the programmer comes from one of the former Soviet republics, he added.

If a bank in the US allowed Internet access to their ATM networks, and they got infected... news like this travels fast in the many security groups out there... they would be out of business in about a month due to the wide-spread media coverage this type of breach would receive.

- But true, nothing will ever be 100% completely safe.

7. Text of House members' letter to JP Morgan Chase
Mr. Jamie Dimon
President/CEO
JP Morgan Chase Bank
2 Bowery
New York, NY 10013

Dear Mr. Dimon,

We are outraged by the potential actions of your company to outsource tens of thousands of U.S. jobs as well as your comments made to the United States Chamber of Commerce on Thursday. We would like to remind you that the taxpayers of the United States of America contributed $25 billion to your company to help stabilize our economy -- not send jobs overseas.

Just yesterday you indicated that the "constant vilification of corporate America" by our public officials is what is hurting our country. This pronouncement comes less than 72 hours after reports surfaced that your institution plans to spend nearly $400 million on outsourcing of jobs to India -- an increase of 25 percent. JP Morgan Chase is not a victim of constant vilification, but it will be viewed and criticized based on actions like this outsourcing policy.

651,000 Americans lost their jobs in February. 3.8 million Americans lost their jobs in the last 12 months. Every day an average of 21,000 men and women receive a pink slip and with it the fear of an uncertain economic future. How should these American workers, many of them your consumers, be expected to have hope for a better future when the very companies they contributed to through the Troubled Assets Relief Program outsource the jobs they desperately need?

In your testimony on Feb. 11, 2009 to the House Committee on Financial Services you said that you looked forward to working with the committee "to help find solutions to our current economic problems, to keep American families in their homes and to begin to restore confidence in our financial markets." There is no better way to make your words immediately ring hollow than taking actions to outsource thousands of jobs that Americans could perform.

In the coming days, we expect to hear more about your plans to invest $400 million in the workers of India and the impact your actions will have on communities across America including potential future layoffs.

One source from an article published in the Economic Times of India stated almost enthusiastically that "JP Morgan is one of the first banks in the U.S. to flesh out its outsourcing strategy ever since the banking meltdown. . . ." This is one area where your institution should be ashamed of leading. Your actions will be watched -- and possibly followed -- by other institutions in the financial sector. Trends of this nature concern us and will be followed closely as well.

-- Signed by 42 House members, including Ohioans Mary Jo Kilroy,
Mary Kaptur, Dennis Kucinich, Tim Ryan and Charles Wilson

19. My guess is all the new Indian rookie programmers are the problem.
Or at least the reason why they can't get the system back up. I left the IT business a few years ago. All the work was going to India, and they were always throwing in new code untested. The years & years of quality controls we had developed in the US disappeared in a few short years.

12. I have a different bone to pick with them
Two weeks ago my partner and I went to the local Chase branch to open up a (joint) checking account. Easy enough.
Yesterday, we received two Chase Sapphire cards from them ready to activate. We never asked for this, nor do (I believe) signed up for them.
I am taking them back on Saturday and I want the account expunged...I don't want any evidence of it being requested/granted/closed. I never asked for it.

Are they slamming customers with credit cards now?

15. I had wondered what was going on -
I only have a small mad-money account with them (we have a smaller bank for our main accounts), but this just shows how easily they can be hacked into ... I did stop at the ATM to make sure the account was ok because I hadn't been able to check it for a small deposit.

22. Figures...
I've been fighting with them for MONTHS about failing to apply my extra principal payments correctly. I even wrote to the office of financial institutions / thrift supervision (or whatever they call it now) to complain. I was getting a different answer from Chase every time. It was so obvious they were lying to me.

Right now is the 3-day window for me to make that extra principal payment (supposedly, according to Chase) and have it applied correctly (not to interest).

Figures...

26. Used to have a card with Providian...
their online site was always a quick and easy way to make payments. Providian was bought by Washington Mutual...the site access and ease of operation did not change. Morgan-Chase bought Washington Mutual and the site became almost impossible to use and/or navigate. Have complained to Chase many times...but the site remains a quagmire.

No one seems to remember that JP Morgan owned the Titanic.

The web site went down right after Chase managed to send me 3 separate overdraft notices, each with a different amount and balance, the last of which had a larger balance than the previous one. Odd. Gee, I sure wish I could log on and see if I need to worry.

Oh well, it's only money.

but just tried to get back on and it's acting up again. You can get to chase.com, and put in your password, but it will not take you to your account. They have not posted any messages about why it's acting up (or even that it is), you simply get a timed out message from the browser.

timing out. But there is no site down graphic, maybe too many people are trying to access at once?

Something is still going on with the site, but it looks like they are on their way to resolving it. I hope the press is paying attention, having a major banks site crash for almost 2 days doesn't say anything positive about our electronic security or structure.

47. Totally lost my sh*t on a "customer service"
person this evening.

FINALLY was able to transfer funds, but when I tried to make my estimated tax payment that is due TODAY, it was declined -- said the transaction needed verbal authorization and to call my bank.

Called Chase........yeah, turns out that I missed somewhere in the fine print while opening this new account (about a month ago) that I am limited to $1,000 in debit card transactions per day. So I get a "supervisor" on the phone who proceeds to lecture me on my reprehensible failure to read their obscure rules and regulations, and, NO, she cannot increase my per day limit.....not even just this once......and even though THEIR website has been down for the better part of three days now, it is MY fault because I didn't somehow psychically intuit that there was going to BE a problem with their website and make my payments LAST week.

I asked her if she really and truly wanted me to tell her what she could do with her rules and regulations regarding **MY** money.

48. man, I hope some heads roll over that, keep complaining
That is totally unacceptable, and a rotten way to treat a customer.

You know what else is weird about this, I have been searching on some news and tech sites, and granted, I am not a tech geek, but still, there has been nothing really about this story. Nothing on Huff Po. Nothing from Chase. Tiny little stories like this that tell us nothing

http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/ct-biz-0916-chase-20100915,0,1866968.story

I mean, if one of the largest financial institutions website and electronic server melts down for almost 3 days, and the media can't even question it, I find that a little bit upsetting. So what caused it anyway? Are there security issues? Was this a tech problem caused by outsourcing? Who had access to my financial data while this was going on? Was there some breech that caused the outage? I am curious, I want to know.
