Exclusive: Republican terror group vows to resume mainland attacks with banks and bankers now potential targets

Henry McDonald, Ireland correspondent
guardian.co.uk, Tuesday 14 September 2010 21.03 BST

Banks and bankers are now potential targets for the Real IRA, leaders of the dissident republican terror group have warned in an exclusive interview with the Guardian. Despite having only 100 activists they also said that targets in England remained a high priority. In an attempt to tap into the intense hostility towards the banks on both sides of the Irish border they branded bankers as "criminals" and said:

"We have a track record of attacking high-profile economic targets and financial institutions such as the City of London. The role of bankers and the institutions they serve in financing Britain's colonial and capitalist system has not gone unnoticed. Let's not forget that the bankers are the next-door neighbours of the politicians. Most people can see the picture: the bankers grease the politicians' palms, the politicians bail out the bankers with public funds, the bankers pay themselves fat bonuses and loan the money back to the public with interest. It's essentially a crime spree that benefits a social elite at the expense of many millions of victims."

But security sources in Northern Ireland point out say the Real IRA lacks the logistical resources of the Provisional IRA to prosecute a bombing campaign similar to the ones that devastated the City of London in the early 1990s or the Canary Wharf bomb in 1996. Although the Real IRA has access to explosives it has yet to carry out large-scale bombings.

The terror group stressed in a series of written answers to the Guardian's questions that future attacks would alternate between the "military, political and economic targets". It is the first time the Real IRA has engaged in such open anti-capitalist rhetoric or focused on the role of the banking system.

the Real IRA may use the same tactic.

4. you are right
this is not the IRA so to speak. It is a group of people pretending as if they have something to do with the IRA which the DO NOT.

Thank you for making this important point!

3. for all of the people in Ireland that lost all of their money in these banks
Lloyd's of London packed up and left and the Anglo Irish Bank went bust. There are probably others I don't know about but the people that had their money in the Anglo Irish Bank are out of luck. Being Lloyd's of London is gone, what happened to their money? Has anyone even bother to address this issue? This mess has left many people in Ireland broke if they had their money in one of these failed banks.

It is like Lehman Brothers all over again on a much larger scale I would say.

I don't know if the Bank of Ireland is still up and running. I rather hope so!

This is who they are against and the ones they are for are those that have gone broke because of this atrocity; that being the Irish people and other account holders in these banks. :(

:dem: :kick: & recommend.

12. It's funny how they call white terrorists "rebels"
It's hard to choose amongst all the acts of rebellion those romantic boyos pulled off, but I guess mine was the time they bombed a meeting of the Collie Dog Fanciers Club. That was just HOT, and the strewn human and doggy body parts were the building blocks of Ireland United and Free.

15. I have predicted the poor will turn on the rich here in the US
another million foreclosures in 2011 and soon enough entire families will be living in cars... it's coming.

The jobs are not coming back. If you think it's bad now, just wait until next year.
