US-Iraq raids leaves 8 dead

FALLUJAH (Iraq) - EIGHT civilians were killed on Wednesday in raids conducted by US and Iraqi security forces in the Sunni Arab former rebel bastion of Fallujah, west of Baghdad, Iraqi officials said.

A US military spokesman confirmed an 'incident' had occurred in Fallujah and an investigation would be started, but declined to give any further details. He confirmed at least one fatality.

The dead included two women and two children. The four men included a former colonel in the Iraqi army during the rule of now executed dictator Saddam Hussein, Fallujah police director Brigadier General Faisal al-Essawi said.

Fallujah media chief Mohammed Fathi confirmed the raid and the toll.
