Jack Shelley, longtime voice of radio and TV, dies at 98
Source: Des Moines Register

Jack Shelley, longtime voice of radio and television news for WHO in Des Moines and a former journalism professor at Iowa State University, died Tuesday night. He was 98.

John D. “Jack” Shelley was on the WHO staff for 30 years, first on radio, then on both radio and television. He joined the faculty at Iowa State in 1965 and became a professor in 1969.

He taught at ISU until 1982 — when school policy forced him to retire at age 70.

Shelley’s voice was rich and distinctive and his delivery that of a polished professional, said friends, colleagues and competitors. His viewers and listeners found him accessible, personal.

2. Integrity and accuracy, with a voice that stays with you
for a lifetime.

Also from the Des Moines Register:

"Michael Bugeja, director of ISU’s Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication, said Shelley belongs in history’s elite lists of broadcasters.

“As a journalism scholar, I put Jack as the fourth-greatest broadcaster of the 20th Century,” Bugeja said. “I place him slightly above Eric Severeid and behind Ernie Pyle, Edward R. Murrow and Walter Cronkite. If we’re considering integrity and trust, rather than only reporting, Jack is right up there with Cronkite and Murrow.”"

I couldn't agree more and wish more DUers could have heard him.
