University rankings dominated by US, with Harvard top

The US accounts for 72 of the world's 200 best universities, according to an international league table.

University leaders say the latest table indicates the UK still has the world's second-strongest university system, but that this is under threat.

The only university outside of North America and the UK in the top 20 is the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, in Zurich.

Mainland China has six institutions in the top 200, more than any other country in Asia. Only two Australian institutions are in the top 50, with seven in the top 200.

13. I went back to school when my kids were in grade school

in the mid 80s. At the time, I chose Berkeley over the state system because they had better financial aid packages. With scholarships, grants and loans and part time work, I managed just fine through grad school. At the time, Cal was ranked the best English department in the country. It was like dying and going to heaven.

I couldn't do the same thing today. In fact, I want to go back for an advanced degree in another field but tuition has outstripped any financial aid I could possibly get even with good grades and all that. It's unreal.

3. Despite all the nay sayers, the best professors, too!

Say what you will, the US college system has given everyone a chance at higher education for decades: land grant colleges, community college, the GI bill, you name it! Go US.

7. This isn't really a surprise.

There's a reason everyone throughout the world wants to go to a US university. It's nice to still be able to feel proud about something in this country.

in the United States. We rank somewhere near bottom amongst
industrialized countries.
