Internal memo accuses Sheriff Arpaio's department of wrongdoing
Source: LA Times

The Arizona lawman's No. 2 man and other top officials are accused of using the anti-corruption unit to conduct politically motivated investigations and to surveil campaign rivals.

Top officials in the office of Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio used its anti-corruption unit to conduct politically motivated investigations, misled the public about a campaign fund that helped Arpaio win reelection and surveilled the Arizona lawman's campaign rivals, according to an internal memo from a high-ranking officer.

The 63-page memo, first reported Thursday by the Arizona Republic, blames Arpaio's longtime No. 2 man, Chief Deputy Dave Hendershott, for the alleged criminal wrongdoing.

(snip)
The most significant part of the memo concerns a search warrant that Hendershott allegedly directed to be served on the Republican-dominated Maricopa County Board of Supervisors, with whom Arpaio, also a Republican, has been embroiled in a lengthy feud. Arpaio and an ally, former County Atty. Andrew Thomas, filed conflict-of-interest charges against two supervisors that were quickly dismissed by judges as legally unsound.

2. More: Could Arpaio's dep't. be placed under fed receivership?

County supervisors want feds on new probe of Sheriff's Office
by Yvonne Wingett and JJ Hensley - Sept. 17, 2010 08:54 PM
The Arizona Republic

Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu has begun probing allegations of misconduct against Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpiao's chief deputy even though two Maricopa County supervisors demanded Friday that he hand off the investigation to another agency.

Maricopa County Supervisors Mary Rose Wilcox and Don Stapley demanded that Babeu send to the FBI or another law enforcement agency the allegations of serious misconduct lodged against Chief Deputy David Hendershott.

Wilcox also said she would formally ask the U.S. Department of Justice to place the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office under federal receivership if the investigation was not transferred. Already, an attorney who represents the supervisors has informally suggested receivership of Arpaio's agency if the sheriff refused to comply with ongoing federal criminal and civil-rights investigations. Wilcox said that suggestion could soon be formalized by the Board of Supervisors.

3. Sheriff Paul Babeu
is nothing but a lap dog for Arpio. I wouldn't trust Babeu as far as I could throw. Those two are buddies.

5. Yep. That's why the supes don't want 'Little Joe' anywhere near it
He'll protect Arpaio by finding he was 'unaware' (as if he doesn't know EVERYTHING that goes on in his dep't!), or by making mistakes in the investigation that taint the evidence and make it impossible to prosecute anyone.

6. Thanks, maddezmom
Arpaio's day of reckoning will come--and he's got a big karma debt to pay. It's frustrating that he's been able to hang on for so long while continuing to do so much harm...

:hi:

7. Give Arizona and Texas back to Mexico
Funny how the states with the worst immigration problems were the ones we took from Mexico in the first place...Even Ullyses S Grant thought the Spanish American war was unjust..

11. Not a bad idea
As some immigrants say, "I didn't cross the border--the border crossed me."

Jon Stewart had a very funny bit about Texas declaring "Don't mess with Texas"--while also declarinhg "Remember the Alamo"--a battle in which Texas got pwned big time.

Perhaps Hispanics are more American than we are...

12. Talk about skewed logic!
We took ALL the states from the Native Americans, so we should give all the states (including YOURS) back to the Native Americans.

Good luck finding another country to live in, because you'll be an illegal immigrant. And trust me, the Native Americans will not coddle you the way we coddle illegal immigrants. (Yes, compared to other countries, we coddle illegal immigrants.)

What part of "we won the war" do you fail to understand? The borders are there, they're legal, and this isn't the 1800's anymore.

Immigrants are welcome to come here legally.

Illegal immigrants are criminals, and that's why they're treated as such. You can't just say, let's make this one crime legal for one race of people--that'll solve everything. Why stop there? Let's make it legal for African-Americans to park in handicapped zones, make tax evasion legal for Asians, and make robbery legal for white people. Laws exist to keep order, and no one race should be immune...especially when people of all races, from all countries, manage to come here legally, and enrich our nation.

This thread is supposed to be about Arpaio's corruption, anyway, not illegal immigration.

8. I like the wording of the thread title: "Department of Wrongdoing" is a great name
for Arpaio's operation!
