Federal Prosecutor in Stevens Case Commits Suicide

A Justice Department prosecutor who played a lead role in the corruption case against former U.S. Sen. Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) has committed suicide.

Nicholas Marsh, who was transferred from the Public Integrity Section amid a criminal investigation of the government’s handling of the case against Stevens, killed himself over the weekend. Marsh had been working in the Office of International Affairs. NPR first reported the suicide this morning.

"Our deepest sympathies go out to Nick's family and friends on this sad day,” Assistant Attorney General Lanny Breuer said in a written statement. “The Department of Justice is a community, and today our community is mourning the loss of this dedicated young attorney."

Marsh_nicholas A former Justice Department attorney, Andrew Lourie, a Kobre & Kim partner who worked with Marsh in the Public Integrity Section, said Marsh (at left) “had a really bright future” with the department.

2. Steven case is dead. No reason to think this is a suspicious "suicide," is there?
Condolences to his family.

4. I think a lot of folks would be surprised how common depression is in the legal profession

A lot of lawyers don't get psychological help. There was a time not long ago when there was some question about whether a lawyer could or should seek mental health services.

5. Stevens Case Was Dropped
Due to prosecutory misconduct, a serious charge. Motives were never established, i.e., was this deliberate to cause the charges to be dropped or gross misconduct by someone looking to put a feather in their hat by nailing a US Senator? Both are awful thoughts.

19. Yet despite this, he "had a really bright future” in the department
Considering the allegations and result in the case, that's a disturbing thought.

6. Anyone know if he was being terrorized by Palinoids?
They are probably still upset of losing that Senate seat.

16. There was never any love lost between Palin and Stevens
If anything, with Stevens no longer in the Senate, Palin's stock as Alaska's "top dog" (I amost used the "b" word but decided against it) was solidified.

11. Which makes them suspect number 1.
They're the last person you'd ever think of, and thus most likely the real killer.

Marsh, represented by Patton Boggs partner Robert Luskin, was one of a group of prosecutors who were under criminal investigation for the government’s mishandling of the Stevens case.
