ATHENS (Reuters) - Greek police said it had intercepted on Monday a booby-trapped parcel addressed to French President Nicolas Sarkozy, after another package exploded at a courier company in Athens.

"One of the explosive devices that the suspects were carrying was addressed to the President of the French Republic, Nicolas Sarkozy," a police spokesman told Reuters.

He said the other parcels were addressed to the embassies of Belgium, Netherlands and Mexico. The latter one exploded earlier in Athens, slightly injuring one female employee at a courier company. The others were detonated by police.

"Police believes there is no link with Al Qaeda. We are still investigating," he said adding that the two men arrested were suspected to be linked to a Greek leftist guerrilla group.

7. Right-wing reactionaries in the EU have a habit of engaging in false-flag ops.
Look up Operation GLADIO.

Funny how these things happen just before elections and important votes in Congress. Maybe not so funny.

3. I doubt it was Al-Qaeda...
Edited on Mon Nov-01-10 09:35 AM by NYMdaveNYI
Most likely a FRENCH radical left group trying to taunt Sarkozy regarding the retirement issue; I don't see why a Greek group would have an interest in this matter.

Maybe this radical French group is mailing the parcel from Greece as a false flag plot?

Oh crap. Now the TSA is going to have an excuse to set up checkpoints at every UPS, Fedex and USPS station in the USA.

8. The French president does not PERSONALLY open his mail
Edited on Mon Nov-01-10 11:53 AM by AzNick
But sending mail to the French president is common practice in France and can be done free of charge.

People mail/email all sorts of things, from praises to insults, from gifts to excrements, in the middle of a lot of official pardon requests (you used to be able to delay paying your traffic tickets for a while if you sent such a request, not anymore, but many ignore this).

I once sent Chirac a letter and got a letter back stating that he actually read my letter personally.

But of course someone is always in the middle.

Thanks for the Smurf, by the way.

ATHENS, Greece — Greek police say small parcel bombs exploded at the Swiss and Russian embassies in Athens, and suspicious packages were detonated outside Parliament, the Bulgarian embassy and a courier company.

No injuries or damage were reported from Tuesday's five small explosions. Police say far-left domestic groups are suspected.

Government spokesman George Petalotis condemned "those who try in vain to terrorize and disturb the public tranquility."

On Monday, four mail bomb failed to reach their targets — French President Nicolas Sarkozy and the embassies of Mexico, the Netherlands and Belgium. Two Greek men were arrested on suspicion of plotting the attacks.
