Early voting Hispanics grow 13 percent: official
Source: AFP

WASHINGTON — The number of Hispanic voters who cast early ballots in this year's legislative elections grew by 13 percent compared to 2006, a senior White House official said Monday.

"We worked hard and made a major effort to reach out to Latinos. We contacted four times more Latino voters that we did in 2006," President Barack Obama's senior political adviser David Axelrod told Hispanic media in a telephone interview.

He said Latinos had cast 660,000 votes so far in early ballots ahead of Tuesday's mid-term elections -- 13 percent more than the early voting total for the 2006 mid-terms -- a number he called "very encouraging."

"If early vote is a trend you're going to see a good outcome in Nevada, California, Colorado," western states home to particularly tight and hard-fought contests, including in Nevada between Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Sharron Angle, a Republican.

3. That depends. The article does not say how many Republicans have cast advance ballots
compared to 2006. If their number is higher than 13%, then yes it could still be bad news.

8. I would like to know how they know that?
Do they track voters by ethnicity?

I thought it was illegal to require said info when you register.

9. Always a good question, that one.
Given we have 50 states with different rules for when and how to vote, it's even more of a good question.

OTOH, it seems reasonable to me to think that people of latin american heritage would be motivated to vote this time around, just like black people and anyone else that is tired of being screwed and used as a political bloody shirt.

FWIW, our ethnicity certainly is tracked, and has been for a long time now. With a good computer and a sound database of names and addresses, I would not think it was too difficult to figure out who voted early ethnically speaking, if you knew who voted early.

But I don't expect you to believe me about that either, so I'll just say "Have a nice day!".

PS: I am not asserting that they are not making shit up, they might well be, that IS how we do politics.

PSPS: I'm just asserting that it's feasible to do it, not that they are doing it, I tend to doubt that.

14. I just checked federal election rules.
Apparently three states (all southern) request race/ethnicity. I guess this is so these three states can prove they are no longer discriminating on the basis of race/ethnicity.

15. I understand that ask stuff like that on the census forms too.
And quite a few other places, like college enrollment, and applications for employment, etc. Collecting information about us is so governmental.
