Beef will cross U.S. border this fall: Vanclief

EDMONTON - Federal Agriculture Minister Lyle Vanclief says he is confident the United States will reopen its border to Canadian beef by September.

'Americans have said very clearly to us, and very publicly, that Canadian beef is safe'

Vanclief says his prediction is tied to a deadline Japan imposed on the U.S.

"We know that Japan has said to the United States that as of Sept. 1, they want some sort of a process to ensure the Japanese that there's no Canadian beef going from the United States to Japan. I know discussions are going on around that," he said. "It's very critical to the United States, as we must understand it's their largest beef customer.
