Obama and Boehner discuss priorities in phone call

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. President Barack Obama called John Boehner, the likely next Speaker of the House of Representatives, to discuss priorities and common ground between Democrats and Republicans after Tuesday's election.

Obama called Boehner and Mitch McConnell, the Republican leader in the Senate, as well as Nancy Pelosi, the current Democratic Speaker of the House, the White House said in a statement on Wednesday.

An aide to Boehner said the two men discussed economic issues. "They had a brief but pleasant conversation," the aide said. "They discussed working together to focus on the top priorities of the American people, which Boehner has identified as creating jobs and cutting spending."

The White House said Obama told the Republican congressional leaders he looked forward to working with them. "In his calls with Rep. Boehner and Sen. McConnell, the president said he was 'looking forward to working with him and the Republicans to find common ground, move the country forward and get things done for the American people,'" the White House statement said.
