Republicans made history on Election Day as they seized control of North Carolina's legislature for the first time in more than a century.

Democratic leaders in both the state House and Senate conceded to their Republican counterparts late Tuesda



Republicans last held a majority in the Senate in 1898. This year, they rode a wave of voter discontent and forced some veteran Democrats into heated struggles.

It's a sad day in NC, very sad day. In 2008 NC turned blue to vote for the first Democratic President
since Jimmy Carter. Now the Repubs have taken over the State House--although our Dem governor will hold
veto power.

1. As I posted in a thread in the GLBT forum...

Every new G.A. session there's a fool who introduces a bill to amend the state constitution to define marriage as one man and one woman. Notwithstanding that we already have a state law on the books to that effect, that guy wants to amend the constitution. We're the last state in the south to have yet avoided the atrocity of an amendment.

Now, not only will that bill make it out of committee, it's very likely to pass. We'll see what Gov Perdue does with it. I don't know the numbers yet, but I don't think the Assembly has override numbers to force the measure to referendum. I hope they're not the total wussies the bunch in DC are. I know my local rep is on our side. Too bad we lost Tony Foriest and got that nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnNNNNNUTCASE Rick Gunn. Foriest was a blue dog, but he was dead-set against amending the state constitution to redefine marriage as "one man and one woman". Gunn is all for it.

Still, life for us GLBTQ folks is about to get much worse in NC, legislatively. My partner is disabled, Poz for almost 30 years. Being the well one and the breadwinner, I'm having to take up co-pays and other expenses where cuts have already eaten away at his care. You know what's coming. The pugs in the legislature have already been trying to ram through massive cuts in what they like to call "entitlements", like they try to make basic necessities sound like a free Cadillac a week club.

I'm really depressed this morning.

4. Me, too. My son has been looking for a new job (although employed)

and his partner has been looking for a new job so he could move to the Triangle area and they
could live together. I wonder if I shouldn't be encouraging them to look for new jobs out of the US.

I do fear that GLBTQ folks could become the new scapegoats for the teabaggery types, much as the Jews
were for the Nazis.

5. If we didn't own a nice piece of land

and knew we could find equivalence (property, job security) some place else, we'd go. We live in a blue county between the Triangle and the Triad, way-way out in the country. If it weren't so gd cold and expensive in MA, we'd give that a try. There's no way I'd find the kind of land I've got anywhere else for what I'm paying here. Pretty much, it's how we can afford to live at all.

2. A sad day for North Carolina

Hopefully, my fellow tarheels will come to their collective senses when they realize why it is that these asshats have been out of power for over a century.

3. I agree. Unfortunately, they will have two years to wreak havoc in the state.
