Republicans promise limited government
Source: Associated Press

WASHINGTON – Emboldened by a commanding House majority and Senate gains, Republican leaders vowed Wednesday to roll back the size of government and, in time, the nation's sweeping health care law. President Barack Obama, reflective after his party's drubbing, accepted blame for failing to deliver the economic security Americans demand while saying of his health overhaul: "This was the right thing to do."

He called the election a "shellacking."

After two years with fellow Democrats leading Congress, Obama now must deal for the rest of his term with the jarring reality of Republican control of the House, a diminished Democratic majority in the Senate and a new flock of lawmakers sworn to downsize government at every chance.

5. You want limited government - Fine, start with the defense and CUT it to the bone
and start putting on education/jobs/infrastructure - that way, the government pays for everything that is needed domestically, and not internationally/globally.

14. You have a great point here
Who consumes the lion's share of government services?

Do we spend any money keeping hovels safe from theft? What is there to protect? What would be the point?

The money for police is spent safeguarding McMansions and real mansions. That's where the money is. That's where vandals would strike.

That's where the police are.

So, cut the services. Let's not pay for them.

Let's see who screams first.

No services. Period.

17. Bullshit
It was under a Republican administration that the government grew astronomically - anyone hear of Homeland Security? And I recall seeing stats (yeah, lies, damn lies, statistics) showing that the federal government grows every time there's a republican administration. Hey, here's an idea for belt-tightening. Cut your fucking salaries and your staffs and refuse to take secret donations. Or this. Fly fucking coach, or take a bus. You fucking hypocrites.

24. You have GOT to learn to speak rethug. Ever since the
Ray-Gun we have been misunderstanding republi-speak and paying the price. Ray-Gun was talking to the rich and mega-rich. If you were one of those his policies and rhetoric made sense, if you were an average American....not so much, and if you thought he was talking to you disappointment was your reward.

Today when rethugs say "limited government" they don't mean SMALLER government, they mean government limited to THEIR and their corporate masters interests. Some of those are the theft of the total net worth of the middle class and poor by outsourcing their jobs and killing their small businesses with large corporation operations (walmart), the theft of the treasury through financial manipulation of banking and wall street and the increase of corporate profits through war profiteering and the elimination of regulation that would protect our environment and workers.

Understand this, they want LIMITED government not Smaller government.

31. We heard the same thing when Ronnie Ray-gun was elected in 1980.
Edited on Wed Nov-03-10 06:21 PM by bulloney
What did we get? A near tripling of the national debt and 30,000 additional federal jobs during his presidency.

We heard the same thing when Bush was selected President by the SCOTUS 20 years later. We ended up with the biggest clusterfuck of a government ever with things like illegal spying on citizens, Homeland Security and the like. In addition, Bush broke Reagan's records for deficit spending.

They cut government all right--if it benefited the little guy. But it was a unending hog trough for the wealthy and corporations to exploit.

So, I hope you don't mind if I sound a little skeptical over the latest Repubs' promises.

39. I think the poster was referring to the gross hypocrisy of both the GOP and American voters...
How GOPers will shill for "limited government" and that appeals to voters who want "limited government" only to vote for such GOPers, who turn around and increase government involvement/intrusion into:

Transportation (feeling up women and looking at nude scans)
Privacy (tapping emails and phone calls without court warrants)
Choice (denying women the right to choose)
Gay Marriage (denying gays the right to marry)
War (putting us into wars of aggression)

etc...
