Spain's 10-Year-Old Mom: Family Are 'Happy'

A mother whose 10-year-old daughter has given birth to a baby has said the family are "very happy" despite an international outcry.

The woman, who gave her name only as Olimpia, said she was surprised the birth of her granddaughter in Spain had made headlines around the world.

"She's doing well and is very happy with her daughter," she said of her child, Eleanor, and new granddaughter Nicoletta.

The woman, who Spanish authorities have described as a Romanian gypsy, told reporters the baby's father is a 13-year-old. He lives in Romania and the young couple have since split up, she added.

I am not the biggest fan of history on DU, by far, but in my explorations of history and of the present world I have regularly come across practices and norms which either have been or are absolutely acceptable which would either prevent an American from sleeping at night or keeping dinner down.

The world. Is. Very, very big. And old. And if there is shit that goes down in my own town which unsettles the hell out of me, it should go without saying that many parts of the world are unrecognizable as being contiguous with this one.

man, these kids are reaching puberty younger and younger, that is unbelieveable!

I can't imagine a 10-year-old even being mentally able to fully care for a newborn 24-7. I hope the gypsy Romanian Grandma is gonna be around to help her, as well as other family members, wow.
