Julian Assange intends to seek asylum in Switzerland

11/04/2010 14:12 - Updated: 23:00

Julian Assange, founder of Wikileaks, said he spent 70% of the budget of its foundation to ensure the safety of its team. - Frank Mentha Julian Assange, the head of Wikileaks, says in an exclusive interview to the TSR that it plans to seek political asylum in Switzerland.

"It's a possibility that we are serious," he says, arguing that Switzerland is one of very few countries that Wikileaks would be safe. "The purpose of such a foundation would be to continue our activities, but from Switzerland," said Julian Assange. The site manager explained that he personally considers an application for political asylum in Switzerland (see video below cons).

"The application was rejected in Sweden and one remains outstanding," he says. Wikileaks has published nearly 500,000 documents secret, including smearing of the U.S. military in Iraq and Afghanistan. Since then, says his manager, his team is threatened and uses 70% of its budget to ensure its security. The Australian also reported that there were only three countries where his foundation could work safely, namely Iceland, Switzerland and Cuba.

2. Switzerland protects so much right-wing wealth. Is this a good idea?
Cuba would be just stupid.

I think Iceland would be his best bet.

3. Wait until he runs into Swiss privacy laws

Switzerland has data privacy rules that would make it difficult for him to publish leaked data without the permission of the subjects of the data.

7. Yes, and legal systems are generally not as stupid as you might think

It wouldn't be the first time someone tried to claim non-liability for breaching European privacy laws by causing the physical release of data to occur elsewhere.

The last time that Wikileaks was sued was in the US by a Swiss bank.

I think if cia/nsa/dod wanted him dead, he'd be dead.

Easier, I think, to just "leak" him some fictional classified memos, to sow fud amongst the alquaeda folks.

:hi:

edit for spelling
