Obama signals tough stance on prickly India issues
Source: Reuters

(Reuters) - Days ahead of his visit to India, President Barack Obama has signaled he will take a tough stance on prickly issues such as outsourcing, and limits on exports of sensitive technology.

Indian news agency Press Trust of India (PTI), which interviewed Obama on Wednesday, quoted him as saying it was "very difficult and complicated" to meet key Indian expectations such as ending a ban on U.S. exports of dual-use technology to India.

The visit puts the spotlight on India's $60 billion IT sector, which argues it is a creator of jobs in the United States and should not be blamed for high unemployment.

An increase in U.S. visa fees, a ban on offshoring by the state of Ohio and the industry's portrayal in campaign publicity as a drain on U.S. jobs has set a frosty tone in India ahead of the visit, which begins on Saturday.

2. Just as he always does, he speaks well, then caves...

The perception that Indian call centers and back office operations cost U.S. jobs is an old stereotype that ignores today's reality that two-way trade between the U.S. and India is helping create jobs and raise the standard of living in both countries, U.S. President Barack Obama told a gathering of business executives in Mumbai on Saturday. . . .

President Obama's speech is a recognition that jobs cannot be created by protectionism but by a growth in trade, said Som Mittal, president of the National Association of Software and Services Companies (Nasscom). The message for India's outsourcing industry in the speech was very positive, he added.

not at all contrary to the one I posted. I read it as saying the same thing because he uses the term "perception" which allows for his other mentioned comment about "outdated, unwarranted". Neither article is particularly detailed, but I can easily see the clipped quotes from your suggested article rolling cleaning into the other article's paraphrasing. It would go something like this....

Obama said, "...there still exists a caricature of India as land of call centres and back offices that costs American jobs. That's a real perception..." which he could easily have ended with "which is an outdated, unwarranted perception."

6. So reposting the same article somehow changes anything? I've already responded to that article
and the fact that it doesn't actually say what the title suggests it says. Obama says it's a "real perception," he doesn't say it is "real and needs to be stopped."

Not the President's position or your outrage based on propaganda.

9. He's the one who chose the words "caricature" and "perception" which
clearly indicate he doesn't agree with those ideas.

7. "India's $60 billion IT sector"
The visit puts the spotlight on India's $60 billion IT sector, which argues it is a creator of jobs in the United States and should not be blamed for high unemployment.

Sure, it might "create" a few CEO jobs (or "jobs" for their undocumented domestic staff) but, otherwise, that $60 billion is money that is being taken directly out of the pockets of (now unemployed) US workers.

12. 60 billion. lol
The US is borrowing 5 billion every day. So that whole India IT sector that has sucked all our jobs equals less than two weeks of government borrowing.

Which is the real problem? India's IT sector, or the US government's crack addiction?

13. "The US government's crack addiction?"
The only reason we're borrowing "$5 billion a day" (I'll assume the figure is correct) is because of the parasitic plutocrats' refusal to contribute their fair share in taxes. Bring back proper progressive taxation rates and that problem goes away. A proper trade policy would help a great deal too. We should stop the practice of subsidizing and otherwise rewarding the de-industrialization of the country.

Obama calls India creator, not poacher, of US jobs

MUMBAI, India – Searching for help half a world away, President Barack Obama on Saturday embraced India as the next jobs-creating giant for hurting Americans, not a cheap-labor rival that outsources opportunity from the United States.
