Sanders wants halt to Comcast-NBC deal after Olbermann suspension
Source: The Hill

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) said he would look to block a merger between NBC and Comcast, citing the decision last week by MSNBC to suspend liberal anchor Keith Olbermann.

Sanders said Comcast's attempt to acquire NBC from General Electric would result in "another media giant run by a Republican supporter of George W. Bush."

The Vermont senator, an independent who caucuses with Democrats, has loudly criticized MSNBC's suspension of Olbermann last week for violating company policies when he donated to three Democratic candidates. The suspension was imposed Friday, and Olbermann will be back on the air Tuesday night.

Sanders expressed concern that the precedent set by that suspension would result in MSNBC becoming more like Fox News, which is part of the Newscorp empire run by Rupert Murdoch. Liberals complain the coverage by many Newscorp properties tilts to the right, mirroring many of Murdoch's own opinions.

If we had a two-thirds supermajority in the Senate we could finally tell the Republicans to go fuck themselves and actually fix all the things they did to America.

With just 60 Bernie Sanders, we're still dealing with Republican obfuscation.

Than I ever can:

Young Reporter: So are you a Socialist?

FDR: No.

Young Reporter: Are you then a Capitalist?

FDR: No.

Young Reporter<very confused now> So what are you?

FDR: I am a Democrat!

In a world where 85% of the "Dems" in office are fully behind Wall Street and WS's "Free Market" notions (Which include passing on the losses to We the People, while keeping the profits) Bernie has to be a Socialist. Because the whole damn definition of being a Democrat has been altered.

"Now, look," <pause> "I don't know that there is much I can do about being a Capitalist, or refraining from being a Capitalist, because as many of you may know, most legislation comes through Congress, and I have no hand in framing the bills that pass through there."

Sometimes he says things like this with enough conviction that you end up believing that at least HE believes what he is saying.

Comings and goings (and what not) were not continuously traced on the internet.

With Pres Obama, any legislation going forth has every conceivable link from HuffPo to Politico analyzing who met with whom, who didn't get to meet with whom and in between. If you don't feel the major spots have enough to offer you, you canfollow random bloggers on issues relating to Finances, economy, women's rights, child slavery, Monsanto and GM foods, and another five million topics as well.

Through the graces of YouTube, we can watch Geithner as he lies through his teeth to Congress. We could watch the hearings held by Issa and Kucinich, even if we held a day job and didn't have the time to track things on C Span.

All of this is yet another reason why the mergers of these top media content providers should be prevented. Our Content Controllers are also the Controllers of this Presidency and all our recent Congresses. They don't want the word to get out on how bad the situation is for the Working Class and slightly above American.

10. Problem is as long as wealthy Right-Wingers own Washington...
...our news delivery services will continue to lean further and further Right. As long as people like Murdoch continue to scrounge up all the news media outlets our "news" is just going to continue to resemble Fox. Funny that we even pretend anything coming out of these news corporations might NOT be slanted toward big-money interests. Thank God politicians like Bernie Sanders are still trying to spread the word, but unfortunately he's a dying breed.

Ed Snider was the asshole who thought it would be neat to bring Sarah Palin out to center ice to drop a hockey puck during the 2008 elections. Mind you Philadelphia region is pretty liberal area and of course Philly fans are some of the loudest fans you can find out there.

Even with music blaring in the background, Flyers booed the bejesus out of Palin even as she walked in with one of her kids.

40. No its not. Snider isn't even on the board or an officer of Comcast.
Snider started a company, called Spectator, that he sold a 60 percent interest in to Comcast. He still heads up that company, which is one of a long list of companies in which Comcast has an equity stake. Snider isn't on the Comcast board, he isn't an officer of Comcast, and he isn't a major shareholder. All of this is readily verifiable by checking Comcast's SEC filing, annual reports, etc.

As I noted in a separate post, I love Bernie, but he needs to get his facts straight. The Roberts family, which controls Comcast, are long-time supporters of the Democratic party and Democratic candidates. Brian ROberts, the current chairman, and his father, the former chairman, gave over $70,000 to Democratic candidates and party organizations during the 2009-10 election cycle, and did not make a single contribution to a repub candidate or repub party organization during that time period. David Cohen, Comcast's exec vp, also gave around $90K to Democrats (and $1K to a single repub candidate). A review of the contributions of other members of Comcast's senior executive team and board shows that while some individuals supported repubs, the overwhelming bulk of the money contributed by that group went to Democrats. Finally, Comcast's PAC gave to Democrats by a 55/45 margin. Contrary to reports that they donated to the candidates running against the candidates that Olbermann supported, the Comcast PAC gave to Giffords and Grijalva and did not give to their opponents. It did not give anything to either Conway or Paul.

There are very good reasons to question the Comcast/NBCU deal, but they should be based on facts, not myths.

141. In the interest of completeness, I should've mentioned Steve Burke
Who is the COO of Comcast and CEO of the cable division. He historically has been a big fundraiser for the repubs. But the fact remains that he works for the Roberts, not the other way around. If the comparison is going to be made to Murdoch, then the proper comparison is to the Roberts (the proper comparison to Steve Burke is to Chase Carey at News Corp).

But I should've mentioned Burke because he is singularly the biggest repub supporter among the top Comcast executives, having donated (and helped bundle) significant funds for repub candidates over the years. However, even Burke is not monolithically repub: in the most recent cycle, it appears that he directed around 40 percent of his contributions to Democrats and Democratic party organizations. (That is considerably higher than what he has done in previous years, which tended to reflecte more of an 80/20 split).

The bottom line is that unlike Fox, Comcast is not monolithically repub. Its top executives and board members include several former Democratic party officials, such as David Cohen (former chief of staff to Ed Rendell) and Decker Anstrom, former Carter White House and Mondale staffer.

46. No.
The deal is being reviewed by the FCC and by the DOJ. Bernie can't single-handedly tell them what to do or not do. He could introduce legislation that would dictate the outcome of that review, but such legislation isn't going to pass in the current environment.

96. I wouldn't call Genachowski, Copps, and Clyburn "Bush cronys"
I wouldn't expect them to stop the deal from going through, either. Probably impose a bunch of conditions that Comcast can live with.

Genachowski: Former senior advisor to Reid Hundt, FCC Chairman under Clinton; former roommate and close associate of President Obama

Copps: Former staffer to Sen. Hollings; loudest, most consistent voice on FCC in opposing media consolidation, favoring net neutrality regulation

Clyburn: Former member of SC PUC; daughter of Democratic Congressman Jim Clyburn.

As for DOJ, I don't expect them to stop the deal either. But, again, labelling the DOJ antitrust division as "bush cronys" is simply baseless. The head of the antitrust division is Christine Varney, who served as an assistant to the President in the Clinton White House and later was appointed by Clinton as a Commissioner of the Federal Trade Commission.

Back way in the day he would drive around and literally sit in your kitten to talk to you... People didn't always agree with him, but he's respected greatly.

I remember him sitting with my overly opinionated mother and being a young girl. Lol.

27. Now, can Senator Sanders put the merger on indefinite hiatus
Using one of those double-secret holds that the Republics have abused since Obama came into office (I think Jerk DeMint has a standing hold on everything...and isn't one of the Oklahoma senators (Inhofe or Coburn) single-handedly holding up aid to Haiti?

Why can't Sanders do that with this merger?

Where are our anti-trust laws -- ?

Why are we permitting a monopoly cable company which makes $500 million and more

a year from internet PORNOGRPHY to take over NBC?

This is insane -- and only Sen. Bernie Sanders seems capable of discussing it!!

Do want to note that Sen. AL FRANKEN ALSO TRIED TO STOP THIS!!

Sen. Bernie Sanders should run for president --

we need some actual liberal/progressive debate to be heard in this country --

Maybe it would inspire the Democratic Party???

45. I love Bernie, and I'm concerned about the NBCU deal, but Comcast is not remotely FOX
Bernie needs to get a new fact checker. Comcast's top executives are and historically have been major donors to the Democratic party. Over the past 20 years, Brian Roberts (the current Comcast chairman) and his father Ralph (the former chairma) have given over a half million dollars to Democratic party campaign organizations and candidates. They've donated to some repubs, as well, such as Arlen Specter and the top repubs in the committees with jurisdiction over telecommunications, but in minute amounts compared to what they've given to Democrats. In just the past two year election cycle, the Brian and Ralph Roberts donated around $70K to Democratic Party campaign organizations and candidates and nothing to repub organizations and their candidates. Other top members of the Comcast executive team and Board also include major Democratic fundraisers as well, such as Comcast Exec VP David Cohen, who gave nearly $90K to Democrats in the past two years and gave exactly $1k to a single repub candidate.

As for George W. Bush, it is true that Brian Roberts gave $2K to chimpy in 2003. He also gave $2K to Kerry in 2004 and Ralph Roberts also gave $2K to Kerry in 2004, but gave nothing to chimpy.

I'm concerned about the NBCU deal, but smearing top Democratic fundraisers as big supporters of George Bush when that's demostrably false is troubling, even if it comes from someone like Bernie, who I greatly admire.

85. Bernie is right, we should not allow multiple media outlets to be owned
by supporters of the same candidate, or members of the same political party.

We should have 1 run by a repuke, one run by a democrat, one run by a Green, one run by a Libertarian... we could have more outlets, but we'd need to get more parties first. :sarcasm:

I 100% agree that there's too much consolidation going on, and that's a problem that the government should get involved in, but when they start to make the argument that their issue is largely with WHO doing the consolidation, little tinfoil covered sirens go off in my head.

86. The Wall Street bailout was the biggest form of Socialism this
century. Under true capitalism, wall street would have collapsed such as AIG's (too big to fail) and all the other money grubbing entities. Capitalism was designed to let the big boys fall and the smaller companies grow and get stronger with new ideas and better operating strategies. The collaspe of wall street was over tauted by fear from Paulson. When president Bush of the REPUBLICANS signed the bailouts using taxpaying dollars for Wall Street, that in itself was Socialism! But for some reason President Obama is being touted as a Socialist by the Right Wing media and the Tea Party. The Democrats that are left standing, need to run as far left as possible and to stop this right wing media blitz and corporate take over of America before it to late before our country turn into Corporate Socialism run by the Republican party. Republicans and the special interest they represent are buying up media and altering as well as eliminating public eduction to slant the mind set of our older generation while teaching right wing ideology to our youth.

in the Senate. Since many things haven't passed in the senate, and the numbers game hasn't changed much. There's a better chance of the merger being blocked that many things that are still on the table from the passed 2 years.

Tom Harkin :) I can only hope. It can't be said I didn't try. And if everyone here emailed their senators, it would get something talking. ahem Democratic senators, unless there are a few left leaning Repukes around

157. The Sherman Anti-Trust Act is still a law.
Just because Raygun didn't enforce it and Presidents after him pretended it didn't exist, does not mean you can't break up these media monopolies. The law worked just fine until Raygun decided to pretend it wasn't there. Now, we have huge regional monopolies that are more powerful than countries. Thanks RepubliCONS.

159. Amen. The only reason to have a government is to determine who can own media companies.

160. Sign this petition!
I am writing to voice my concern about the proposed Comcast-NBC merger.

The consequences of unchecked media consolidation are clear. As big media get bigger, we end up with fewer jobs in our newsrooms, more sensationalism and celebrity gossip instead of real news, and media that are out of touch with what our communities need.

Comcast's proposed takeover of NBC is particularly troubling. The largest cable and Internet access provider could also control one of the nation's largest movie and TV studios. That's too much power for one company, and it's a threat to competition and innovation at a moment when new forms of online video delivery are emerging.

Comcast wants to preserve the old cable model of higher prices, fewer choices and less innovation. This merger would also usher in a new wave of media giants as other companies scramble to match Comcast-NBC's market power.

This takeover will do nothing good for our communities, our state or our democracy. It's time Washington stood with the public and stopped the Comcast-NBC mega-merger.
