American Missionary Drowns in Unsuccessful Attempt to Save Indonesian Teens

Valparaiso, Indiana. A Christian missionary pilot from Indiana has drowned while trying to rescue teenagers who were swept off shore while swimming at a beach in Indonesia.

The Mission Aviation Fellowship says 30-year-old Benjamin Uskert was at a beach on the island of Sumatra with a group of orphans when two teens were pulled away from shore on Sunday.

The group says Uskert and another adult swam to rescue the teens, but Uskert and one of the teens were swept away.

Uskert is a native of Valparaiso. He joined the Nampa, Idaho, based missionary group in 2008 and its program in Sumatra the next year.

He is survived by a wife and son.
