Republican Study Committee Recommends Cutting Welfare Program That Already Expired
Source: Huffington Post

The Republican Study Committee on Monday recommended reducing the deficit by cutting a welfare program that lards the federal budget with $2.5 billion in wasteful spending every year.

The Committee, led by Rep. Tom Price (Ga.), called for cutting the $2.5 billion Emergency Fund created by the stimulus bill to help states subsidize jobs via the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program, formerly known as welfare. Price has targeted the program as part of House Republicans' "YouCut" initiative to reduce federal spending.

"The goal of welfare programs should be to help people get back on their feet as quickly as possible rather than simply expanding dependence on government," said Price said. "In addition to saving taxpayers $25 billion over the next 10 years, cutting the emergency fund from the President's failed stimulus package will refocus temporary assistance on its rightful role."

Problem is, the TANF Emergency Fund has already expired, along with the 240,000 jobs progressive economists say it created.

13. FDR did institute two major jobs programs to help the recovery
after the depression. They worked. We didn't survive without action.

19. Lol, you mean we need to 'trust the fabulous invisible hand of the
market' once again?

It may be invisible but we know whose hands they are. And I wouldn't trust them with a piggy bank.

FDR put people to work right away, on infrastructure eg. OMG, Government jobs!! People need paychecks now, not to wait for invisible hands at work somewhere behind the scenes most likely pocketing whatever they can while they 'work themselves out'.

23. Yes ...
It was called the WPA and the Conservation Corp and the other Federal employment/jobs program. That's how we survived.

20. Then talk to the warmongers and the bailouters who raided
the SS fund in order to play war games and bail out their corrupt buddies on Wall St. That was the Bush administration, remember?

Now they don't want to pay back what they stole from SS, so they are pretending that SS had something to do with the deficit. They are lying and intend to keep borrowing from that fund and increasing it by raising the retirement age, and cutting benefits whenever they can get away with it.

The American people are not responsible for the debt run up by Republicans, except for those who blindly supported them of course.

9. In 2012 this $2.5 billion welfare cut will be
incorporated in the G.O.P. election advertising campaign. Fox will expand the $2.5 billion exponentially, culminating in a final cost saving relative to the number of G.O.P. candidates running for office. Count on it.

11. The savings have already been expanded to $25 billion!
This will be a great "accomplishment" for Price to campaign on in the next election.

But the crux of the issue is that eliminating the TANF emergency fund will save exactly zero dollars, because the program has already expired! It was funded at $5 billion for two years, and ended on September 30, 2010. It’s over, and there is no money for Price to save.

Advocates, as well as the Obama administration, have asked that Congress fund the program for an additional year for $2.5 billion. Price multiplied that over ten years to come up with his ludicrous pronouncement that he would save $25 billion by cutting the program.

14. I hope someone is saving this for an ad for the next election.
What a bunch of selfish fools. They care so little about issues that they don't even take the trouble to see what issues are actually there to fight against.

It was instructive to watch one after the other of them argue against a minimum wage, but when asked if they know what it was, none of them knew.

Congratulations America for bringing back the stupidest political party in the history of the world.

17. Here's an idea - how about cutting some of YOUR stupid programs enacted 30 years ago?
Maybe it's time to re-prioritize where the tax cuts should go, Thugs. Remember, the rich aren't getting any richer right now with your stupidity.

The wingnuts of old money will soon run out of cash.
