Healthcare Reform Not Top Voter Issue

Tue Nov 9, 2010 8:25pm EST

By Maggie Fox, Health and Science Editor

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Americans who turned out to vote last week dislike healthcare reform but it was not their top concern -- the economy was.

A poll released on Tuesday by the non-profit Kaiser Foundation showed healthcare came only fourth in a list of concerns voiced by people who voted in the congressional elections on November 2.

"When voters were asked in our open-ended question to voice, in their own words, what influenced their vote, they said healthcare was a factor, but not a dominant one," the foundation said in a statement.

With the United States emerging slowly from its worst recession since the 1930s, the economy and jobs were mentioned most often, followed by party preference and the views of candidates.

Then came healthcare, which was mentioned as a "top" concern by just 17 percent of voters.

1. Presumably all those disillusioned over the loss of our best chance yet
for MEDICARE FOR ALL stayed home?

Just watching Rachel Maddow -- she's showing film of Allen West's aide telling us

that if they don't get the outcome they want with voting, they'll use the 2nd Amendment.

Kind of ironic, because it costs $38,000 per wounding for each gun wound!

7. Obama should have made jobs his most important priority from day one.
Most of us saw it, why couldn't he?

He may be in a bubble now, but back then he should have seen the problems that were coming.

9. Health Care Reform as opposed to what we got, Health Insurance Reform
Edited on Wed Nov-10-10 08:45 AM by harun
would be the biggest jobs program in the history of the United States and should have been sold as such from day one.

Entrepreneurship in this country would explode if people could create startups without having to worry about how to pay for the Health Insurance of their employees. Having everyone covered all the time and not being tied to their employer would create more jobs than anything else they could do.

All the economic decisions he has had to make was to save the system from complete destruction. Now they can move on to creating jobs after the fixes. When faced with a global economic collapse from the finance crisis, there is no use trying to create jobs when the whole world was in danger of all its economic institutions failing.

8. It's too easy ...
to assume we have an either/or choice here: Either we get jobs or we get health care.

We need BOTH these issues addressed and resolved.

Articles that rank issues should remind us that our needs exceed the number of items they happen to be listing, and nothing they list is mutually exclusive.

If we cut health care back to the GDP percentage that Canada pays; we'd gain EIGHT PERCENT in our GDP. That would be enough to hire every out of work person in the country, twice over.

If we had elected a President who intended to reform Wall Street, we all would be safer, more secure and well on our way to dealing in a positive way with China, outsourcing, credit card companies, mortgage fraud and a host of other issues that would have put us on our feet by now.

As a progressive, I am deeply sorry that the Democratic Party nominated Obama two years ago. I think he knew that Wall Street had engineered our recession, and I think he sold out. How else do you explain Geithner, Bernacke and Summers? Really? How else?
