Powell Not Sure Iraq Trailers Were Labs

AOL no less

http://aolsvc.news.aol.com/news/article.adp?id=20040402223609990003&_mpc=news%2e6

WASHINGTON (April 3) - Secretary of State Colin Powell conceded Friday evidence he presented to the United Nations that two trailers in Iraq were used for weapons of mass destruction may have been wrong.
In an airborne news conference on the way home from NATO talks in Brussels, Belgium, Powell said he had been given solid information about the trailers that he told the Security Council in February 2003 were designed for making biological weapons.

But now, Powell said, ''it appears not to be the case that it was that solid.''

Powell told reporters that as he worked on the Bush administration's case against Iraq U.S. intelligence ''indicated to me'' that the intelligence was solid.

''I'm not the intelligence community, but I probed and I made sure, as I said in my presentation, these are multi-sourced'' allegations, Powell said.

3. Doesn't anyone remember this famous news article?
http://www.guardian.co.uk/Iraq/Story/0,2763,968581,00.html

Mr Powell conducted a full-dress rehearsal of the speech on the eve of the session at his suite in the Waldorf Astoria, his New York base when he is on UN business, according to the authoritative US News and World Report.

Much of the initial information for Mr Powell's speech to the UN was provided by the Pentagon, where Paul Wolfowitz, the US deputy defence secretary, set up a special unit, the Office of Special Plans, to counter the uncertainty of the CIA's intelligence on Iraq.

Mr Powell's team removed dozens of pages of alleged evidence about Iraq's banned weapons and ties to terrorists from a draft of his speech, US News and World Report says today. At one point, he became so angry at the lack of adequate sourcing to intelligence claims that he declared: "I'm not reading this. This is bullshit," according to the magazine.

12. Brit paper-never saw mainstream light of day in the US
Yes I remember that but like I said that got nada zero no coverage in the US corporate media world.

When I was talking to friends before and during the military attack phase of the war they repeatedly asked me where I got THAT information, I tried told them that they were being LIED TO. The sad part is that almost to a man they have told me that I was right all along (thanks DU) but that really doesn't make it okay.

The common perception (gee wonder where they got that from) was that Europe Asia the whole world was so against this because they hate W and America (thus boosting the "why do YOU hate 'Murka? crap) when in actually they were reading and receiving a completely different set of information (and actual facts) to base their decision on. Yeah there was some W hating but the vast difference in what we got and they got is/was astounding.

6. It's too late, Colin. I've often wondered what "dirt" they had on you.
Did they threaten to declassify some My Lai documents? Are you an adulterer? Oh, well. It doesn't matter. You saw the one-way sign on the road you chose but you chose it, anyway. And a lot of people have died for your choice. Now you have to live with it.

How can they go to bed at night, knowing what they did, knowing, how many are dead and dying, civilians and soldiers, for nothing?

9. Oh sure, NOW he's willing to look at the facts.
Mr Powell, you have no credibility left. This is just another nail in the coffin. A minimum of 10,000 dead civilians in Iraq, and NOW you think you MAY have been wrong?

Ray McGovern could have told you that you were wrong a long time ago.

Charlatan.

19. Welcome to DU
AS I stated above I had the same kind of conversations with friends and they thought I was crazy. Hell, I even gave the WMD story some benefit of the doubt probably from being hit over the head with it every time I turned on the box despite all of the evidence (See Will Pitt's book "The War in Iraq") to the contrary.

They have almost to a man come back and confidentially admitted that I was right. That doesn't make it okay though.

Again welcome to DU :hi:

20. Bakersfield
:hi:

Yes I know Bakersfield and it is a hell hole. My brother was in the Air Force and stationed there for a couple of years during the Vietnam war.

Welcome to the DU, the land of the free and the home of the brave here.

Suddenly all of these diehard pukes are changing their tune as their sons and daughters now risk being drafted and killed in a "war" (INVASION) that should have never been.

Now those that opposed the invasion of Iraq are proving themselves to be the real true patriots of our country for they spoke up and voiced their opinions.

You are either with us or against us ... what a pile of Nazi crap indeed!

Hang in there and don't let them draft you my dear young one!

17. We knew it was Bull shit the minute he said it
I was here at DU then saying it was bull shit

Hans Blix was taking soil samples of the locations the administration was seeing them in the satelight photos. Guess what No signs of toxins.

GUESS WHAT.... The US does not have the technology to makes these weapons with out leaving trace elements behind. So what Collin was suggesting by that statement up in front of the UN security council was the Iraq had technology superior to ours.

UTTER BULL SHIT

28. Limited hang-out in full view.
Amazing, isn't it? While most of us knew of Powell's "This is bullshit!" remark regarding the UN presentation months and months ago, the average media consumer will now get a partial admission of the larger truth, designed to minimize the damage of a potential break in the dam.

Some of us have argued that Clarke's recent admissions are a limited hang-out - a view supported by the fact that the White House vetted "Against All Enemies" before its release.

Powell's latest trick is a look at a limited hang-out in action. And just think, this is new to many people out there.

We need to get the earlier "Bullshit!" story out there, to show people that we knew a while back what was going down, and that the media is clearly manipulating them. The amount of time between that earlier story and this is a good way to back that up.
