Suicide Bombers Attack Afghan Airport

Taliban suicide bombers have attacked the main airport and a foreign military base at Jalalabad in eastern Afghanistan.

Smoke could be seen rising from the airport and explosions were heard, a witness nearby told Reuters. Helicopters flew overhead while the attack continued and the body of at least one suicide bomber was seen.

Nangarhar provincial police chief Obidullah Talwar confirmed the raid but had no further details.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said 14 suicide bombers were involved in the assault.

JALALABAD, Afghanistan (Reuters) – Taliban fighters attacked a foreign military base at the main airport in eastern Afghanistan on Saturday, one of four incidents in 24 hours that marked a sudden upswing in violence.

Militants mounted attacks in Jalalabad and Kunar in the east and in Kunduz in the north, after an attack in the capital Kabul on Friday, apparently demonstrating their continuing strength despite NATO-led forces stating that they have made gains.

The attacks will send a message to NATO leaders meeting in Lisbon next week that the Taliban remain a formidable enemy. European NATO leaders are under particular pressure because popular support for the drawn-out war is sagging.

5. Afghan militants torch NATO convoy; blasts kill 3

KABUL, Afghanistan – Insurgents set fire to a convoy of NATO fuel tankers in eastern Afghanistan on Sunday, while a series of bomb blasts in the south killed a NATO service member and two civilians.

The convoy attack started in the early morning when a group of gunmen rushed on the trucks in Behsud district of Nangarhar province — the same area on the edge of Jalalabad city where a group of would-be suicide bombers tried to storm a NATO base on Saturday, said Ahmad Zia Abdulzai, a spokesman for the provincial government.

The drivers of the trucks quickly fled and the insurgents set 12 tankers ablaze, said Abdulzai. Firefighters worked to quell the flames throughout the morning, as police secured the area. No one was killed in the attack, Abdulzai said.
