Pueblo police interview author of pedophile guide pulled from Amazon
Edited on Sat Nov-13-10 11:01 AM by harvey007
Source: Denver Post

Police are investigating whether the author of a guide for pedophiles did anything illegal even as they try to protect him from a threat posted on a local website.
Phillip Ray Greaves II of Pueblo has drawn national attention because his self-published book for sale on Amazon offers advice to pedophiles on how to make a sexual encounter with a child as safe as possible.
Pueblo police heard news reports about the book and went to Greaves' home Thursday morning to interview him. Pueblo Detective Dustin Taylor described Greaves as cooperative and said he gave detectives a copy of the book when they asked for one.
"He was just a normal man. He didn't seem unnerved by us being there," Taylor said.

1. This story just gave me the creeps
It reminds me of a Special Victims episode where a pedophile thinks himself a good person because he never had actual sex with a child. It ended badly for him.

3. I'm confused;
Because a person has an attraction to something or someone and does not act upon it, does that mean that society should punish them? I want to do terrible things to certain entities. Will the thought police come and arrest me? When certain conservative commentators comment that they dream certain liberal leaders have been injured should they be arrested (more on this topic later). The list could go on and on.

I'm sure these comments will get me a lot of negative comment in that I seem to be coddling this certain type of social misfit. That is not the case. I am of the mind that all instances of people using their larger stature to gain physical advantage over another is a larger, if not more socially repugnant, human condition. I cite the recent media reports of child and adolescent bullying. How about spousal abuse? The man is usually larger than the woman and puts his 'girlie pants' on and hits his wife/girl friend. Or one could argue that the US has been bullying many smaller countries over the centuries.

A paedophile's psychological makeup is interesting. However, that does not excuse any overt act they take. Society's punishment for this act is tough and probably will get tougher. After all, this is another instance of the strong taking advantage of the weak or smaller.

7. Agreed, but...
After all, this is another instance of the strong taking advantage of the weak or smaller.

...by the standards of our laissez-faire, Social Darwinist society, shouldn't that make it not only legal, but praiseworthy? :sarcasm:

8. I'm confused at your confusion
The church used to give instruction on how a man could beat his wife in the Christian way. And the church claimed that it was actually necessary since women were weak and easily manipulated by Satanic minions. Maybe there are people who think that if pedophiles write literature on how to get sexual gratification without actually having sex with children (reminds me of Bill Clinton claiming he never had intercourse with Lewinski). I recall the guffaws when he thought that made him innocent.

13. The thoughts are not the issue. You're right that we all have thoughts
that if acted on would get us (one hopes) arrested and not allowed to be in company with society. But this went further than thought and certainly encouraged others to go further than thought. In effect he was teaching pedophiles how to be "better" pedophiles and to fool themselves into thinking that there is a way to have sex with a child that is not confusing, traumatic, and that doesn't have the potential to cause a lifetime of pain. Remember, that child grows up, and is confronted with his or her own confusion and society's horror at an act that they participated in, even if this author is convincing the perpetrator that they can understand and consent to it--which any child development expert and most sensible human beings will tell you they can't.

It may neve be brought up, but his own erotic fantasies may be tied up in the knowledge that, veen if he never laid hands on a child, he's been a shadow participant in many molestations.

So in my opinion there's MUCH more than thought going on here.

15. That's exactly what I've been trying to point out
Fantasizing about something, even writing it out, is never the same as doing it. That's where the line is.

4. Code of Conduct??
Author thinks "it is not always bad for the child".

So, there is an OK way to commit this crime?

Are you kidding me??

5. ... Greaves argues that pedophiles are misunderstood, as the word literally means to love a child.
He adds that it is only a crime to act on sexual impulses toward children, and offers advice that purportedly allows pedophiles to abide by the law ... http://www.denverpost.com/news/ci_16600509

6. It's confusing...
...because it seems, at least according to news accounts I've seen, that the book's goal is to get those with pedophiliac tendencies to not act on those tendencies. Which, in itself, would seem to be pretty unobjectionable advice.

The problem is, the only way to confirm that that is what is in the book is to order the book for yourself -- which is something most people (myself included) would never do under any circumstances, even to determine whether that was true or not.

12. Are you offering anything here, besides blow-hard noise?
Jackson is dead. Do you have something connecting Jackson to this story? Did he, for example, buy a copy of the book?

9. Hey, its OK, the cop said...
"He was just a normal man..." Probably more out of amazement than anything else, they expected a stereotyped pervert.

14. He sounds like a pathetic man, not a criminal
It also doesn't sound like he's broken any laws.
