More US households short of food

Almost 15% of US households experienced a food shortage at some point in 2009, a government report has found.

US authorities say that figure is the highest they have seen since they began collecting data in the 1990s, and a slight increase over 2008 levels.

Single mothers are among the hardest hit: About 3.5 million said they were at times unable to put sufficient food on the table.

Hispanics and African Americans also suffer disproportionately.

The food security report is the result of an annual survey conducted by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA).

3. we've been giving to our local food banks

for years. we're doing okay so when the economy got bad we doubled our contribution. we also give to feeding america. we've got it set up on a monthly basis. it automatically gets charged to our credit card.

around this time of year our grocery stores have a big box where you can put food for the poor. i would imagine they do this all over the country.

every little bit counts.

7. I'm turning my 1.5 acre yard into vegetable gardens and edible landscaping

Next year I intend to grow over 1000 sq. ft. of vegetable garden and donate most of it to the local food shelves. Within 5 years, my fruit tree orchard will be bearing, so fruits will be added to the donations by then.

8. That's a LOT of food!

I have 3- 4' X 4' square foot gardens and I grow more than enough for my husband and I. 1000 sq. ft. of garden is a LOT of garden but if you can work it, good on ya! I'm in between crops right now (although I still have peppers!) but when I get back into full production again I'm going to put out a little cart in front of my house, put out the excess veggies along with a coffee can asking for donations. I figure those who can can put a little something in there and ff they can't, they can take what they need with our blessing.

10. I'm gonna give it a shot

It's the same size garden I took care of as a kid on the farm, and that garden and our livestock was our primary source of food. My wife and the next-door neighbors are all interested in helping me, so there will be a few of us to work it if all goes according to plan.
