Bikers rally to support Denair, CA boy's flag display
Source: MSNBC

A 13-year-old Stanislaus County boy at the center of a flag controversy got a big show of support Monday as many people rallied to his side. Cody Alicea was earlier told by Denair Middle School officials that he could not ride to school with a U.S. flag on his bike. The story has gained national attention, from Rush Limbaugh to the Drudge Report.

The school changed its mind, and now Alicea can display the stars and stripes. When he rode from his home to school on Monday, he was followed by a parade of people on motorcycles. A military jet flyover was also expected.

"I'd just like to say thanks for the support," Alicea said before his ride. Officials at the school told Alicea not to display the flag, citing safety concerns. Some students had complained about the display.

7. not really.
pilots hafta keep their flight hours up so if the jets weren't flying over this kid's school they'd be flying over something else. not everything in the world is an outrage.

8. strange to hear from the article

'no longer allows flyovers at high schools and elementary schools, nonmilitary graduation ceremonies, and other events deemed unlikely to boost recruitment'

things must've gotten much better since 2008 for the rules to change

14. Pilots can pick the flight plan
and if they choose to fly over a specific part of a specific city at a specific time that's just practicing "time on target" drills.

15. Do we know for sure that it's not a privately-owned military jet?
There are a few of them out there.

3. The officials should've just let him fly the flag for goodness sake
Edited on Tue Nov-16-10 02:21 AM by The Northerner
Allowing him to display it wouldn't have created this controversy anyway.

Who cares if he flies the US flag on his bike.

4. Safety concerns.
Edited on Tue Nov-16-10 02:55 AM by Lasher
Denair Unified School District Superintendent Edward Parraz said the campus recently experienced some racial tension. He said some students got out of hand on Cinco de Mayo. He said some students displayed the Mexican flag, while others displayed American flags.

One more paragraph makes it easier to understand the controversy.

18. Will right wing robots ever tire of being used?
This was a safety issue that was subsequently reversed. That should have been the end of it.

Why do people always fall for these manufactured causes?

19. So they shouldn't allow any Mexican flags nor Cinco De Mayo celebrations on campus.
Edited on Tue Nov-16-10 02:12 PM by Township75
(assuming there isn't a 4rht of July celebration). That shoudl solve the problem....otherwise, this kid should be allowed to fly the flag of his choice.

20. Bikers? Really? Even those in the US who are supposedly most defiant of
any authorities and rules are suddenly overcome with piety at a sight of a flag. I mean, really? How deeply ingrained this "patriotism" superstition
has to be into the US national psyche? I am truly in awe of the mass media that can achieve that type of mind control.

21. This was staged
I am convinced this whole thing was staged

(1) No principal or teacher, EVEN IN 'COMMIE' CALIFORNIA would ban the flying of the US flag

(2) If it weren't staged, there would have been A LOT MORE discussions between the two parties
