KUOWLeaders of the Machinists Union are trying to put a stop to an industry conference scheduled for next month in Seattle. They say the event is aimed at luring aerospace manufacturing jobs to Mexico. KUOW's Deborah Wang has more.
TRANSCRIPT
The event is called "Mexico's Aerospace Industry Conference." According to its website, it promises to showcase the competitive advantages aerospace manufacturers enjoy in Mexico.
The conference features speakers from Boeing, Canadian aircraft maker Bombardier and GE Aerospace. It also includes experts on offshore aerospace manufacturing.
But leaders of the Machinist Union are trying to shut it down. They say it's a blatant attempt to steal aerospace manufacturing jobs from this region.
Connie Kelliher is a Machinists Union spokesperson.
Kelliher: "America needs jobs now and you know these aren't just any jobs. These are good paying aerospace manufacturing jobs and they're vital. If the nation is going to recover from the economic crisis then we need to keep these jobs here and grow them."
The union has sent a letter to conference organizers asking them to cancel it.
If it goes ahead, they have vowed to protest at the conference venue and at the offices of companies that participate, including Boeing. Conference organizers could not be reached for comment.
