July 18, 2003: White House press secretary Ari Fleischer concedes that Bush made a false claim in his State of the Union address six months earlier when he said Iraq had tried to buy yellow cake uranium from Niger to make nuclear weapons.

Sept. 28, 2003: Justice Department begins probe of allegations that the White House leaked the name and CIA employment of the wife of a former U.S. ambassador, Joseph Wilson, who had criticized the Bush administration on Iraq. A grand jury is set up to probe possible criminal wrongdoing.
