World comparison shows U.S. healthcare lacking
Thu Nov 18, 2010 8:13am EST

By Maggie Fox, Health and Science Editor

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A third of Americans say they have gone without medical care or skipped filling a prescription because of cost, compared to 5 percent in the Netherlands, according to study released on Thursday.

The study is the latest in a series by the non-profit Commonwealth Fund showing that while Americans pay far more per capita for healthcare, they are unhappier with the results and less healthy than people in other rich countries.

The study published in the journal Health Affairs also showed that 20 percent of U.S. adults had major problems paying medical bills, compared with 2 percent in Britain and 9 percent in France, the next costliest country.

"U.S. adults were the most likely to incur high medical expenses, even when insured, and to spend time on insurance paperwork and disputes or to have payments denied," the report reads.

7. Yup. The last report I saw said:
We spend TWO AND ONE HALF TIMES more for healthcare, per capita, than France, which is second most expensive.
And our results are abysmal.
I know us DU types all know that...why can't the Dems and our President simply communicate that information to the rest of our countrymen and women?

11. They did communicate that, but some people don't want to hear it.
They prefer listening to Republicans who tell them we have the best health care system in the world, and everyone else flocks to America for their health care to escape "soshulized medicine."

13. I don't want to get into a nitpick contest with you, but...
I picked up the information I mentioned on the web...from DU and other liberal blogsites. I never heard (or saw) the President or any of his White House spokespersons or any Dem in Congress cite those statistics in public, let alone repeat them unsparingly (something that should have been done and should be done...the unsparing repetion part.) I also cannot remember hearing anybody on cable or broadcast news ever citing those stats.
The Republicans have made skillful use of the great MSM echo chamber out there to repeat and strengthen their lies. I wish I could say that Democrats are as skillful in getting the truth out.

5. Just today
I found out that my insurance denied my last two doctor appts for pre-existing condition. Of course, both things I had had treated were new conditions with no prior history. Now I have to go through an appeals process which includes letters from the providers along with other BS documentation. I swear, they figure most people will just give up when they get a denial.
For this coverage I pay over $500.00 a month which includes very steep co-pays.

:grr:

16. Unless you have really good insurance"Covered" doesn't mean they'll have access to care
Just ask all those insured people who declare bankruptcy because of medical bills. They thought they were "covered" too.

9. Who's 'us', please?
Seriously, for whom are you speaking?

Many of my 'us' may be or get ill and not be able to get care because insurance companies refuse to insure us (just happened to me) because of pre-existing conditions, age..and we're not poor enough for Medicaid. And we cannot afford those high-priced plans offered through the government for those who have been without insurance for 6 months.

I am very happy I live in Canada. I was born in the USA but chose to become a Canadian citizen years and years ago. Never regretted doing this.
