Arizona Budget Cuts Put Some Organ Transplants Out of Reach

Source: ABC News

Randy Shepherd is a 36-year-old father of three who needs a transplant to replace a failing heart weakened by childhood bouts of rheumatic fever. When he was placed on a transplant waiting list last year, the prospect of resuming a normal life with a healthy donor heart helped him tolerate the fatigue, lost appetite and the inability to play sports he loved and work at the small plumbing business he founded.

But nothing prepared him for the shock of learning that Arizona's Medicaid program was eliminating transplant coverage for people with his condition.

"They said I would be placed on the inactive list until I could arrange some kind of alternative financing because it is considered elective surgery," said Shepherd, of Mesa, Ariz., who has been disabled for almost two years. The family hangs on financially with his wife Tiffany's salary as a dental hygienist.

As the United States continues debating expanded health care access, the state of Arizona has begun rationing some care it says it cannot afford to give its poorest residents. Beginning on Oct. 1, Arizona's Medicaid program, the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System, stopped covering seven types of organ transplants, including heart transplants for non-ischemic cardiomyopathy, lung transplants, pancreatic transplants, some bone marrow transplants and liver transplants for patients with hepatitis C.

Congressman Grayson was right - republican plan is just die! Hey Mama Grizzly - here's your death panels! Tell me again how the U.S. has the greatest health care in the world - if you're lucky enough to be able to afford it!

On edit we should be able to opt out of our tax dollars keeping Cheney alive!

8. There was a article about ...
(I only scanned this article, so I don't know if this instance is discussed, but) a Hispanic patient who travelled to Phoenix (from Tucson) for a liver transplant, only to be told that AHCCCS wouldn't cover the cost. So he was just told (figuratively) "Go home and die."

But the disturbing thing (as if that wasn't disturbing enough) were all the crazy comments on the article's online bulletin board. There comments from says that because he was illegal (which he isn't) and that he is Hep C positive (which again, he isn't) so he didn't deserve the transplant to the usual drivel about he should show some personal responsibility and pay for his own healthcare.

When I couldn't take it anymore, I wrote:

"Maybe this is an inappropriate time to remind all you self-made, standing alone against the world, island dwelling, rugged individualists that even when you have insurance (whether employer sponsored or paid for individually) other folks are still covering the lion's share of your healthcare costs ... that is the nature and purpose of insurance pooling. You pay your premiums and deductibles and I, and the other members of the insurance pool, cover the rest."

My comment was met with crickets ... other than non-responsive and cowardly "Thumbs Downs" (the Arizona Daily Star's version of unrecs).

I hate ignorance, but self-righteous ignorance makes me nuts.
