Sick Sept 11 workers agree to $712 million settlement
Fri Nov 19, 2010 2:06pm EST

NEW YORK (Reuters) - More than 10,000 workers suffering health problems stemming from the September 11, 2001, attacks on the World Trade Center have agreed to a $712 million settlement with New York City, officials said on Friday.

More than 95 percent of the 10,563 workers had to agree to the deal for it to go ahead.

The Garretson Resolution Group, which has been assessing the claims, said in a letter to the federal judge overseeing the case that 95.1 percent of the workers -- 10,043 -- had submitted documents agreeing to the settlement.

The firefighters, police, contractors and others who worked at "Ground Zero" in the ruins of the World Trade Center sued the city and its contractors for claims of injuries associated with their rescue and clean-up work.

1. That’s not NEARLY enough.
Edited on Fri Nov-19-10 04:18 PM by NYMdaveNYI
I live within a two-minute stroll of Ground Zero; many people I know, who lived here in 2001 have serious respiratory issues, and a couple have contracted Mesothelioma.

It’s terrible, and their medical expenses are ridiculous.

$712,000,000 is merely a band-aid on a gunshot wound.

The City is fucking broke, and with the money they CAN spend, they’re fucking selfish, greedy bastards with.

2. Thats 67,000 per person
I have no clue what the medical care for their injuries will cost, so maybe 67,000 is nowhere near enough, but I don't think its chump change.

I would assume assume some people have minor injuries, and are settling for much much less than 70k (because they don't need 70k for their injuries), which leaves more money for people that do need the money.

I'm not saying its too much, I'm not saying its not enough. I can't make that determination without more information.
