Federal judge pleads guilty to 2 drug charges
Source: AP via The Guardian

ATLANTA (AP) — A veteran federal judge who was arrested on charges that he bought and used drugs with a stripper pleaded guilty Friday to two-drug related charges, including a felony count of giving her cocaine even though he knew she was a convicted felon.

U.S. Senior Judge Jack T. Camp pleaded guilty to the felony charge of aiding and abetting a felon's possession of cocaine when he bought drugs for the stripper, who was secretly cooperating with authorities. He also pleaded guilty to two misdemeanors: possession of illegal drugs and illegally giving the stripper his government-issued laptop.

Camp, 67, faces up to four years in federal prison when he is sentenced March 4, but he is likely to get less time. Camp also agreed to resign from the bench and cooperate with any questions authorities may have regarding the cases he handled while he was being investigated.

When a judge asked Camp if the charges were accurate, he replied, "I regret ... I am embarrassed to say it is, your honor." Neither he nor his attorneys offered any explanation for his actions. The charges against Camp, who is married with two grown children, were laid out in a shocking eight-page affidavit released days after his Oct. 1 arrest. The judge, who remains free on a $50,000 bond, was originally charged with four drug-related charges and one count of possessing firearms while illegally using drugs.

1. St. Ronnie appointed this criminal to the bench
I'd like to know why this scofflaw is 'likely to get less time' than an 'ordinary' criminal would serve.

3. Fed. Judge pleads
He will do less time because he will have no criminal history. No priors. Most people convicted in federal court for similiar charges have a criminal history before they get entangled with the federal system. The Federal sentencing scheme gives lesser sentences to people with less criminal history.

Decrease Increase Federal judge pleads guilty to drug charge

By Bill Rankin
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Zachary D. Porter/Daily Report
Senior U.S. District Judge Jack T. Camp Jr.

Phil Skinner, AJC Longtime federal judge Jack T. Camp Jr. allegedly bought drugs from an
undercover agent in the parking lot of the Velvet Room in north Atlanta.

Former senior U.S. District Judge Jack Camp, whose arrest on charges of buying drugs and his relationship with a stripper shocked the state's legal community, pleaded guilty Friday to federal charges.

He resigned his position Friday morning, a condition of the plea deal.

Camp pleaded guilty to one felony, aiding and abetting a felon's possession of cocaine, a painkiller and marijuana. He also pleaded guilty to two misdemeanors -- possession of illegal drugs and giving his government-issued laptop to the stripper.

Camp must serve at least 15 days in custody. Federal sentencing guidelines recommend a term of four to 10 months in prison, although Camp and his attorneys can ask for a more lenient sentence. Camp will be sentenced March 4.
