House panel calls off Waters ethics trial
By Susan Crabtree and Jordan Fabian - 11/19/10 02:11 PM ET

The House ethics committee announced Friday it has delayed its trial of Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) due to the discovery of new evidence in the case.

It is unclear from the committee's statement whether the trial will move forward.

According to a joint statement from committee chairwoman Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.) and ranking member Jo Bonner (R-Ala.), the case is being referred back to the subcommittee investigating the matter. Waters's trial was set to begin on Nov. 29.

"The committee voted to recommit the matter regarding Representative Maxine Waters to the investigative subcommittee due to materials discovered that may have had an effect on the investigative subcommittee's transmittal to the committee," they wrote. "As a result, the adjudicatory subcommittee no longer has jurisdiction over this matter and the adjudicatory hearing previously scheduled for November 29, 2010 will not be held."

Maxine Waters' November 29 ethics trial canceled
Fri Nov 19, 2010 6:41pm EST

By Tom Ferraro

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A congressional panel, citing new evidence, on Friday said it had canceled an ethics trial set for November 29 for Maxine Waters, a top Democrat on the House of Representatives Financial Services Committee.

The House ethics committee said it returned the case to its investigative subcommittee, placing in doubt if and when a new trial date would be set and drawing a sharp response from Waters.

"Today, the committee has brought discredit upon itself and this institution by denying me, and more importantly my constituents, the right to set the record straight," Waters said in a prepared statement. "The public expects those who judge to hold themselves to their own rules," she said.

Waters, of California, was charged by a House ethics panel in August with three counts of breaking the chamber's rules for helping a bank where her husband has an investment.

8. Maxine is right. By cancelling the trial, they have denied her the
right to defend herself and you will hear these charges "whispered" for years to come. I think they realized they messed with the wrong lady in this case, and, just to save face, "cancelled" the trial.

9. Maybe it's exculpatory evidence

I think that's what you call it when the evidence favors the defendant.
