Carter: Fox commentators have ‘deliberately distorted’ news
By Kevin Bogardus - 11/21/10 03:00 PM ET

Jimmy Carter said Sunday that Fox News commentators including Glenn Beck have “deliberately distorted” the news.

Speaking on CNN’s "Reliable Sources" Sunday, the former Democratic president took aim at the cable news channel climate, often a target for President Obama as well who says he tries to avoid the cable chatter.

“The talk shows with Glenn Beck and others on Fox News, I think, have deliberately distorted the news. And it’s become highly competitive,” Carter said. “And my Republican friends say that MSNBC might be just as biased on the other side in supporting the Democratic Party, the liberal element.”

The ex-president said opinions about the two channels was “part of give and take” in politics in the United States. Carter also believes CNN has suffered from trying to remain nonpartisan in comparison to Fox and MSNBC.

1. Anybody who equates Fox with MSNBC is simply wrong.
That includes you, Mr. President.

People talk to Jimmy Carter. A lot. He's accessible.

7. I imagine he's heard some people say that space aliens have abducted them..
Like you said, he's accessible and people talk to him a lot.

It still doesn't mean he should repeat what those people say as having credibility.

10. People saying that MSNBC is the left wing equivalent of Fox..
Have as much credibility as people saying they've been abducted by space aliens.

And Jimmy Carter shouldn't repeat either bullshit as being credible.

15. Once upon a time - Presidents didn't deliberately polarise the people
against each other as Bush did so well with his "Either your with us or against us" crap

I see Mr President Carter's statements more in line with a true statesmen and politician who does NOT deliberately offend even Right-Wing Wack Jobs.

24. It's working real well to tear the nation apart..
Of course, we could all become Teabaggers, then there wouldn't be any polarization.

I'm sure you would like that, it would be tranquil, the tranquility of the grave for a hell of a lot of us.

26. My point is it worked well for them - How many seats did they win
So just how wise is it to criticize Pres. Carter for NOT engaging in divisive political rhetoric

28. The point is though that Carter did indeed engage in divisive political rhetoric..
It was just political rhetoric that divided "the left" from the rest of the Democratic party..

And frankly I'm not sure what percentage of Democrats now consider themselves "the left", I'm starting to think it's not a particularly significant one any more given some of the things I see posted here on DU.. When it comes to Democratic politicians you could probably count "the left" without having to take your shoes off.

When you're living in Teabagtopia because you don't want anyone on the Democratic side to engage in "divisive political rhetoric" you may come to regret always taking the moderate course between center right and falling off the edge of the world right..

31. The majority of American Voters are not Radical Left or Right
and when a Radical group such as the TeaBaggers begin to open their collective "Pie Holes" in public such as we witnessed in the run up before the last election the majority of Americans reject them. Just as the Majority of Americans reject "Frothing at the Mouth Liberalism"

I agree with you on the issue the Dems need to be MUCH more vocal in their division from the same failed economic policies the RATpubliCONs have been peddling for the last 30 years. However they would need to vote that way too.

5. Too bad he continues putting out the lie about equivalencies. He could have done so much there.
A missed opportunity. Pity. And CNN is *far* from nonpartisan. Many's the time they've let Thugs lie and go unchallenged.

11. "my Republican friends say..."
Yes, they'd like to spin it like it's just another football game with two sides playing the same game. But that doesn't make it so.

I'm not sure daytime MSNBC could even be called liberal. Prime time MSNBC may be mainly liberals but that doesn't mean they always support the Democratic Party. They don't have any Democratic politicians on their payroll that I know of (Fox has a mess of Republican politicians on the payroll). And MSNBC doesn't make up crap out of whole cloth like Fox does.

Apparently President Carter doesn't watch MSNBC.

22. MSNBC does lean towards the more liberal side a tiny bit
but no where near as much as Rupert Murdochs Fox News does, after all I dont recall MSNBC giving 1 million dollars cash in support to the dems unlike the donation that Murdoch had his company give to the republicans.

13. Fox News loves to kick President Carter around like a punching bag.
O'Blowy has made a career out of it and stalking women on the set. I'm glad he finally said it, even if he threw in the 'liberal element' table scrap.

14. MSNBC is liberally biased
BUT they do not distort reality, spread fear, or report lies. Faux Noise is a dangerous anti-American propaganda media site that has blood on its hands.

even excluding Faux, is so far to the reich that anything even remotely balanced seems "liberal".

29. Agree completely. Just because they are not flat out lying and smearing
people who oppose anything Conservative doesn't make them Liberal. Democracy Now on LinkTV is Liberal. They are Liberal but I don't see them lying to make their point. One doesn't need to lie to support their own ideology. Fox News is all lies all the time and their viewers love it.

report facts, backing it up with the truth. Funny how that's been distorted to be such a dirty thing. That alone speaks volumes.

We know about death panels, $200M a day trip, birthers, etc.

What are the distortions on the left?
