Authorites are investigating reports of an engine fire on a plane attempting an emergency landing at Kennedy Airport.

The plane was still in the air late Sunday afternoon and emergency responders were rushing to the scene.

There were reports that a wing appeared to be on fire and that the plane was dumping fuel.

More than 100 firefighters were dispatched Sunday to John F. Kennedy International Airport in Queens awaiting the arrival of a plane that is said to be on fire, according to the fire department.

The fire department received a call shortly after 5 p.m. that an airborne plane was on fire. "Right now the plane is in the air and it appears like it might be dumping fuel before it lands," said a spokesman for the Fire Department.

In response to the reports, 25 fire units and 106 members were dispatched the airport.

"We are there on standby waiting for it to land," said the Fire Department spokesman. "Unclear if it’s the engine or a wing."

The spokesman said he did not know when the plane was likely to land. And officials were unsure how serious the situation was.

NEW YORK CITY (BNO NEWS) -- A Delta Air Lines flight made a safe emergency landing at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York on late Sunday afternoon, officials said.

Delta Air Lines Flight 30 had declared an emergency after having unspecified engine problems. "There is some sort of engine problem with the plane," a spokesman for the New York City Fire Department said while the aircraft was still in the air.

The spokesman said the plane, a Boeing 767-300 with nearly 200 passengers on board, was dumping fuel before it attempted to make an emergency landing at JFK Airport. Delta Flight 30 had just begun a flight from New York to Moscow when its trouble began.

The aircraft landed safely at approximately 5.50 p.m. EST, without any reports of injuries.

20. There's safety equipment to put out an engine fire, and if it doesn't go out,

the land the plane WITH all the weight of the fuel. Very few commercial planes have fuel dumping capabilities anymore.

Shorter range versions usually do not have the capability, however the long range ones do. I would assume a JFK to Moscow would be considered long range.
