Jury convicts Guandique of murdering Chandra Levy
Source: Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) — A jury has found Salvadoran immigrant Ingmar Guandique (gwahn-DEE'-kay) guilty of murdering Washington intern Chandra Levy back in 2001, when her disappearance became a national sensation.

Guandique was convicted of two counts of first-degree murder for attacking Levy while she exercised in Washington's Rock Creek Park in May 2001. Her disappearance made headlines when she was romantically linked with then-Rep. Gary Condit, D-Calif. Condit was once a suspect but police no longer believe he was involved.

6. He was in the country illegally, technically he's not really an immigrant. I guess AP was afraid to
say illegal immigrant.

16. Not afraid
Some folks don't use that label. It's their choice not yours. It's still a country were we have freedom of speech isn't it?

7. The reason is to point out AP's error - this criminal is not an immigrant
he is an illegal alien.

5. Like South Park?
EVERYONE KNOWS WHAT YOU DID. JUST TELL THE TRUTH.

Uh huh. Golly, that whole due process thing is just sooo cumbersome.

9. After reading that the only evidence against the guy who was
convicted was from a cellmate informant, I began to have second thoughts about the verdict.

12. Indeed
And who is to say if they got the right guy even now? As I recall (and relying on my swiss cheese memory is always a dicey proposition), Gary Condit was finally ruled out as a suspect when his alibi held up and there was no physical evidence linking him to the place where Levy's body was found. It will be interesting to see what Guandique's sentence will be. Will the prosecution give tacit acknowledgement of the weakness of its case and seek a minimum sentence (fat chance), or will it figure that as long as things are running good, might as well go for the maximum possible?

8. So where is the apology to Condit, whose career they ruined?
And to the Condit family? Or is all of that just "collateral damage" ?

14. dear sara...
only we can do it, individually, with a unified voice. This was SUCH a FUBAR situation. History may do him well, current time, with the exception of thinking people, will not.

15. For Attorneys here, Can the Condits Sue?
The reporting was false, there was actual damage and it was malicious. Can the Condit family sue for libel? I'd like to see the tabloid rags bankrupted.

11. Hmmmmmmmm
In the monthlong testimony, the defense argued that Guandique became a scapegoat after investigation failed to develop, and also pointed to the fact that an unknown male’s DNA was found on Levy’s jogging tights. Prosecutors argued the DNA was the result of contamination but admitted that they had little direct evidence—no eyewitnesses and no DNA evidence linking Guandique to Levy.

The bulk of the prosecutor’s accusation depended on the former cellmate of Guandique, Armando Morales, who testified that Guandique confided in him that he killed Levy as part of an attempted robbery, but he said he never raped her.

Prosecution also presented testimony from two women that Guandique attacked in May and July 2001 in Rock Creek Park. Both women stated that they were able to fight off Guandique after he attacked them while they were jogging.

When I first read about the conviction, I thought apologies were in order. I'm not so sure now. Who knows what really happened?

I'd like to know what kind of deal the jailhouse snitch got. Maybe Guandique did it, maybe not.
