Patriot group seeks Arizona-style immigration law in Iowa
Source: Des Moines Register

Craig Halverson of Griswold, national director of the Minuteman Patriots, said today his group has sent petitions to supporters in 81 Iowa counties. Several members gathered about 400 signatures on Saturday at the U.S. Post Office in Council Bluffs, and a similar petition effort was conducted in Sioux City, he said. Petitions were also handed out last Thursday at a meeting of the Tea Party Patriots in Spencer.

The goal is to obtain about 200,000 signatures on petitions to influence Iowa politicians.

“We have illegal aliens working here and they are taking the jobs of American citizens in Iowa,” Halvorson said, noting that many people are concerned about high rates of unemployment. Millions of Iowa taxpayers dollars are being spent to provide services to illegal aliens in Iowa, and that money could be used to reduce the state’s budget deficit and stop tax increases, he added.

A freshman legislator has already agreed to introduce a bill in the Iowa Legislature modeled on the Arizona law, Halverson said, but he doesn’t want to disclose the lawmaker’s name until significant support is generated by obtaining thousands of signatures on petitions.

And that's just the sort of thing that horse's ass Branstad would go for too...

2. meat packing industry.
I live in a small town in Iowa which is 50%+ hispanic. We are home to a large meat processing concern.
Around 45 years ago they (meat packing industry) began bringing in hispanics to break the unions. Union meat packing jobs were once very highly paid jobs.
Of course that crap that those petitions are based on are - what's the word - lies. But we're hooked in with all the FUXes and the nets out here now so we know how to hate 'others' just like all the rest.

BTW, my little town is doing fairly well, thanx for asking. But it sure would help in wages went up.

6. If I remember correctly the right to work laws had a lot to do with
breaking the unions. My brother worked in the Harley pack and was the last white man to be let go because he did not know how to speak their language. I understand the anger but I will not accept the hate. One of the lessons we learned in that pack was that it is one of the most dangerous jobs around and not everyone wants to cut off their fingers or destroy their back lifting heavy carcases.

9. I just never though of Iowans as the sort to take a knee-jerk approach to a problem.
Arizona I can see, but not Iowa. Given the circumstances you presented, I would more expect an effort to check immigration status for workers and impose stiff fines on the employers for such violations. But as you said, the FOX noise and Internet is pretty much everywhere now.

11. One point that makes me surprised that King gets elected in the
number of people who live there who have German ancestry. Back when I grew up there we were taught both in school and church that what happened in Germany was wrong and should be guarded against in our own nation. I do not understand how any faux nonsense could make them forget.

13. Yeah, my entire heritage is German. We have been in this country
since 1850s. The lessons I learned from that school and church have stuck with me and drive much of what I do as a Democrat.

4. "Minuteman Patriots"?
Just because they call themselves patriots doesn't mean they are acting as patriots. Yeah, instead of checking employees private-industr4y jails m ake more money if they are delivered to their facilities for incarceration courtesy of Iowans tax dollar-funded law enforcement. Here's an idea: just build a fence around Iowa.

7. Every area has idiots
Iowa doesn't have a corner on the idiot market.

The towns mentioned in the article are in western Iowa, home to pukeworthy congressman Steve King (R-Racist), and are NOT representative of most Iowans.

8. By area I meant the northwest area. I now live in a mainly full of
Democratic voters and I can actually talk to people about things without being called names. Yes there were democrats in that area but we were a distinct minority. When I went to the UofI in Iowa City it was a whole different story.

21. There are many remote and unguarded crossings along that border
or is that the nothern border? I get confused.

All I know is Minnesota's southern border seemed a long way off after I was once pulled over by the Iowa highway patrol for doing 65 on I35 (when the speed limit was 55). The trooper took pity on me and only gave me a warning (probaby because my mother was in the car and tried to argue with him - he no doubt understood why I was anxious to get home) but it happened right after I crossed into Iowa from Missouri and it was a long drive north at 55 mph. I nearly put my gas pedal through the floor when I got to Minnesota.

your southern border. ;)

22. Wouldn't it be more effective to go after the people that hire illegal immigrants?
Or is that just not something we can talk about with teabaggers?
