The chief executive of Animal Defenders International (ADI), Jan Creamer told Reuters that jungle cats are held in cages too small for their large muscular bodies. The owners often aren't prepared to care for the cats when they first acquire them.
"Chiara was with circus Alegria. And as you can see how small her cage is. It's barely longer than her body, but the owner got her as a cat. What he said is that she grew up very fast. He didn't realize that she was going to grow so fast," Creamer said.
ADI worked with the government for the passage of law number 4040 which was signed by Bolivian President Evo Morales in June, 2009. It bans wild and domestic animals in travelling circuses throughout Bolivia - a first of its sort worldwide.
